I know I'll be shot for this, but I just moved to the NO area in 2007.

I've gathered through context clues that he was probably the host of the shows on WWL that Bobby & Deke now host, and that he has passed on.

Can someone fill me in as to who he was, what he was like, and why he was so beloved?

TIA.

Why this reaction?

I'm sure I would have loved the guy, but I can't help that I wasn't privileged enough to have been around to experience him.

He was just a huge part of the New Orleans Saints. He did a radio show and is a large part of the saint's landscape. I am only 19, but I still have a lot of memories hearing him complain about the Saints playing poorly.

Buddy was a longtime radio personality / TV broadcaster and sportswriter. He covered lots of sporting events in New Orleans but he became famous for his coverage (and frequent lambasting) of the Saints.

He started the baghead craze back in 1980 by wearing bags on the air because of how pitiful the Saints were playing. 1980 was a very tough year for Saints fans as they had high expectations going into that season. They had come off their first ever non losing season in 1979, finsihing 8 - 8. Archie Manning led a high powered offense that could go yard for yard with this year's unit. However, that Saints team fell apart, losing their first 14 games that year. They became so bad to see that Buddy said he was humiliated to be associated with them and the baghead idea got started.

He was often banned from the team plane because of his criticisms and former Saints owner John Mecom was a favorite target of his.

I don't know whatever became of the place but he used to have a lounge just off the corner off Vets and Clearview in Metairie. I wonder if that place is still around and of they've done anything to celebrate him during this season.

He was a local guy who spent his whole career in N.O from the 60's untill his death. Many people grew up with Buddy D as the voice of local sports.

He was fairly well known natioally. When he died it made ESPN.

Buddy was just Buddy. He was a passionate man who was with this team through the worst years. He never got to experience 2006 or this year which is truly ashame. Hes still a legend obviously but if you never got to hear him postgame you missed out. Some of it was classic. He used to call people a squirrel during his show which is a line ill never forget.

The Saints were so bad in the mid-to-late '90s that listening to Buddy D on the Point After was often the highlight of a fall Sunday afternoon. His putting the "squirrels" in their place helped cushion the blow of many a loss.

I don't recall Buddy ever being anywhere near as crazy as Hebert after the Pats game

I don't understand what you want this board to do for you, friend. I could jaw about all the years of listening to him on the radio on the way back from school or after all of the Saints game I watched or went to. He was a radio sportscaster. I guess what I would recommend to you would be to use the internet to listen to some of his comments, etc.

It was different type of insanity. When Buddy hosted the show the callers were drunk and the host was sober. Although he sounded drunk. Now it's somewhat reversed.
Buddy would make his post game comments and then take callers. Any caller that disagreed with Buddy's comments were called squirrels. Buddy also had a very pronounced N'Awlins accent to go along with a tongue the size of Shaq's shoe.

That's funny.

Everyone else seemed to do just fine.
