I just watched his highlights for the first time and thought he was pretty good. He seems pretty quick and is a sure tackler. I am not upset with this committment at all. There is negativity that lurks out there about him though. What it is about?

He IS pretty good. He's very quick and plays 'til the whistle blows (and sometimes, a little after the whistle). He was just voted 5A Defensive MVP in the LHSAA Coaches Poll a couple of days ago (ahead of West Monroe's Jordan Allen) and has received a variety of other honors over the past two seasons. He's about 6'-2", 225# and runs about 4.65 in the 40. He was recruited by LSU as an athlete and I think they're still trying to figure out where he'll fit best - situational DE, FB, maybe LB.
I have no idea where all the negativity about this kid's ability comes from. Teams were having to double and triple team him this year. I think he'll contribute immediately on Special Teams and will see significant playing time before his years at LSU are over.

The northshore league is quite weak, that's the majority of the issue with Bates. I've seen him live at least 20x. He is a good athlete but imo not someone you would see as a solid contributor in the s e c. I'm hope I'm wrong.

He's been too busy at LSU this weekend to make a side trip to Lafayette.

Not a surprise. One district in North LA and how many in South LA?

Looks like nine districts (statewide) in 5A football to me. District breakdowns, as per The Advocate:

Here are the basic districts approved for 2009-10 and 2010-11 by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s executive committee last week.

CLASS 5A*

District 1
Airline, C.E. Byrd, Captain Shreve, Southwood

District 2
Natchitoches Central, Ouachita, Pineville, West Monroe

District 3
Acadiana, Barbe, Lafayette, LaGrange, Sulphur

District 4
Carencro, Comeaux, New Iberia, St. Thomas More, Westgate

District 5
Baton Rouge (CNF), Catholic-BR, Central, Denham Springs, Live Oak, Scotlandville, St. Josephs Academy (AG), Walker, Zachary

District 6
Destrehan, Dutchtown, East Ascension, East St. John, Hahnville, St. Amant

District 7
Covington, Fontainebleau, Hammond, Mandeville, Northshore, Ponchatoula, Slidell, St. Paul’s, St. Scholastica (AG)

District 8
Assumption, H.L. Bourgeois, Central Lafourche, South Lafourche, South Terrebonne, Terrebonne, Thibodeaux

District 9
Bonnabel, Chalmette, John Ehret, L.W. Higgins, Grace King, West Jefferson

District 10
Academy Of Our Lady (AG), Archbishop Chapelle (AG), Archbishop Rummel, Archbishop Shaw, Brother Martin, Dominican (AG), Jesuit, Mt. Carmel (AG), St. Augustine

*District 1 and 2 combined for football only

1 and 2 are combined for football. So you have 1 district North of Lafayette. Of course South LA coaches/players are going to receive all of the awards. We'll take rings over votes.

This is the same district that produced LT Chris Faulk (Northshore) and WR Armand Williams (Slidell). Apparently, Les Miles isn't as worried about the level of competition in District 7 as you are.

I can't argue with your logic.

This is a popular and persistent rumor, but it doesn't make any sense to me. Maybe - MAYBE - if he was an offensive skill player, he'd pass up LSU for early playing time and dazzling stats at ULL, but he's not.

I don't care how many girlfriends, brothers and/or high school friends he has in Lafayette. Why would a football player pass up LSU to go to ULL?

Armand Williams is rated a 3* but Max Emfinger rated him a 5*. As they say beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

If only this were completely true. But a lot of the badmouthing comes from morons on this board who claim to HAVE seen him play.

He seemed to be having a great time at Bogie's last night, especially while wearing his LSU football nametag around his neck.

Jeez, he's already wasting away brain cells at Bogie's with all the kids spending their trust fund money?
