He is listed as a Sophomore on LSUsports.net. Is this correct?

If he didn't play, he's an automatic RS

I'm pretty sure he got a medical redshirt. I think LSU needs to apply for it and it then may be granted by the NCAA.

He played in some early games, but was injured. they are applying for a medical redshirt. It may not have been granted yet???

He played in 1 or 2 games and got hurt. Makes him a soph unless he applies for and receives a med rs from the ncaa
1 play burns your year

It isnt done by percentage of plays anymore? I believe it was 12% of total snaps played and you could still RS.

No. 1 play and your out for traditional RS. Medical RS is a different story all together.

They changed the old rule a few years ago. Now it's one play and the RS is vacated. I think LSU was trying to get him a Medical Redshirt though.

They asked and recieved a medical redshirt. Craig Loston is a Redshirt Freshmen.

I may be wrong here, but I thought that you couldn't request a medical redshirt until you've completed your eligibility (Charles Alexander, Kirston Pittman and OU's Jason White come to mind as people that did this). Since Loston played, he will be a soph next year. I would expect him to start two years, then leave after his Jr. year a la Peterson. I don't imagine a need for a medical redshirt will ever come into play with Loston.

If he's as good as everyone says, I don't see him staying around either. FWIW.

Medical Redshirts
If a student-athlete suffers a season-ending injury or illness after competing in a limited amount of competition during a particular academic year, he/she may qualify for a medical hardship waiver which would allow him/her an additional season of competition during the five-year period of eligibility. To qualify for a medical hardship:
(a) the student-athlete’s injury or illness must occur in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition or subsequent to the first day of classes in the student-athlete’s senior year in high school;
(b) the injury or illness must occur prior to the completion of the first half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport and must result in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season; and
(c) the injury or illness must occur when the student-athlete has not participated in more than two contests/dates of competition or 20% of the institution’s scheduled contests/dates of competition in his/her sport (whichever number is greater).

Loston has not received his red shirt year yet. 50%-50% he does.

No, what those dudes got was a 6th year, because they had already used their traditional redshirt year. But that only happens when you are injured in your 5th year, so to answer the other poster's question, Richard Murphy can only get a medical redshirt and play in '11 if he gets hurt again in '10. If he stays healthy this year, it will most definitely be his last.

actually, I don't think you had to have been injured in the 5th year to get a 6th. Pittman and White both played their 5th years pretty much injury-free, and I believe Alexander did as well. Pittman played 2, missed 2 with injuries, played a healthy 07 and then got the 6th yr granted for 08.

Yeah, you might be right. Maybe it's that you have to have missed most of 2 entire seasons to be granted a 6th. Either way, Murphy only has 1 more left to play at LSU.
