I doubt very seriously he was offered the job. It's almost certain there were discussions between his people and their people about it, but no definite offer was likely made.

The reason it blew up was: it was not a committable offer.
Seriously. They wanted him to be a candidate and discuss it/interview. His reaction was, it's either mine now or go to hell.
