A combo of things. I have never liked the zone blocking scheme, unless your o-line really knows what it's doing and is coached up on technique. The zone scheme also requires a back with elite vision and cutting ability. But many teams run it, especially in the NFL, because it is supposed to "handle" any front/blitz a defense can throw at it.

I like a counter trey, iso, power, toss scheme. I don't even mind a triple option scheme if you commit to it and run it right. I also like misdirection and fakes.

So basically we had a vanilla, predictable, poorly executed zone blocking scheme that didn't fool or overpower anyone.
