If you disagree, then flame away. But the truth is that the only reason Chavis is held in such high regard by some Tiger fans is because he came in on the heels of the co-DC disaster in 2008. Chavis is an adequate DC, but not exceptional as his defensive schemes are simple and predictable. LSU's lack of creativity in running stunts and blitzes is one of the main reasons there was so little pass rush this year. And the continued use of a 3 man rush and dropping 8 into coverage on third and long proves why he earned the nickname "3rd and Chavis."

If Chavis leaves, then I would like to see LSU hire a DC with a more aggressive approach and get back to the attacking style of defense we came to enjoy over the past decade. The loss of an attacking D is one of the reasons LSU has lost its swagger. We need to get it back.

Replace "Chavis" with "Miles" in your post and you'll be on the right track.

Example:
quote:

Miles would be no big loss
But the truth is that the only reason Miles is held in such high regard by some Tiger fans is because he came in on the heels of a BCS Championship and 13-3 SEC record in 2003-2004. Miles is an adequate HC, but not exceptional as his brain is simple and predictable.

He's not the greatest DC out there, but he's certainly not the worst either. And although common belief on this board is that we can just go pluck coaches at will, the reality is that any hire has a certain amount of risk involved.

chavis leaving is mainly a problem from an instability standpoint and how it looks to potential candidates...

our D did get better over the year overall, but i'm still far from happy and i do miss the aggressiveness we had in the past. i'm perfectly willing to give him another year before i just ship on the guy, but i want to see us ranked much higher nationally in D next year.

We definitely had a " bend but don't break " mentality. We were tough to score on inside the 20, but other teams moved the ball on us. I'd give Chavis a B, he might deserve higher considering the lack of offensive production.

Or is Chavis bailing cause he sees the end is near for Miles?

some fans might feel that way but, they would be really really misguided. the guy had 14 rock solid seasons as one of the best coordinators in the toughest defensive conference. in all, yes. this would be a huge loss for the tigers

It would be a loss just from the instability angle. The defense improved as the year went on IMO. Three different coordinators in three years? Learning a new defense every year? I'd be aggravated as a player.

Can't be good.

I'd rather see him stay for a while and let our relatively young defense settle into a defensive system. I'd rather have a "bend not break" mentality than what we had last year. And I shudder to think about recruiting. That will take a hit if this comes to fruition.

Could be, but Richt is in much hotter water than Miles...and Miles has accomplished more than Richt...

as long as miles wins 8 games, he gets another year added to his contract so no, he's not going anywhere anytime soon.

This is a very good point. I thought about this too, but Les is still going to be the man at the top. Whether Chavis stays or goes this doesn't all of a sudden get us an SEC West Title. Whether Chavis is here or not I don't think makes too much difference. Maybe 2nd or 3rd in the SEC West and 7, 8, or 9 wins with or without Chavis. If this is good enough enough for you as a fan then everything will be OK no matter what happens.

Chavis is sloppy seconds, imv. I've watched him at UT for 15 years. His teams were undisciplined and not dependable down the stretch. Remember the hits out of bounds against LSU QBs over the years?

Good riddance. But the larger concern, imv, is what's happening over at the LSU football office. The LSU brand is dropping and I have little faith that it's getting better. Do you?

If 8 wins means 4-4 in the SEC, he's toast. Or should be.

As I understood it (per the Rant so it's probably wrong), 8 wins makes Miles ELIGIBLE for another year extension, but does not mean he automatically gets it. And I would have to search belowpar's posts, but I thought BP said Miles did NOT receive that extension after The 08.

At this point I think its real hard to say how good or bad Chavis is at LSU. It is clear that he was better than adequate at UT, but until we can move the ball around better on offense and not play 70-75 snaps/ game on defense who knows. Tough for any coach to prevail in that set of circumstances.
