Mentioned today in the advocate. Doesn't have a bunch of coaching/recruiting experience (RB coach at Eastern Michigan now) but a pretty dang good resume as a player at Michigan and in the NFL. Would likely connect well with young kids who have the NFL as a goal.

He would be a great choice and he would do just fine recruiting and selling LSU. Not to mention he would be working with a Michigan man in Miles and he would get to learn the ropes and his own pace and Miles would take care of him. If I was him I would be calling and applying for the job.

Would hope for LSU to bring in someone with a little bit more experience to replace someone like Porter. He hasn't proven to be a good recruiter yet, and while being a Pro back helps, it doesn't guarantee anything.

Also, being a pro back doesn't mean your a good coach. If he is hired and gets $220K + year, I will be majorly pissed off, because he's obviously not earned that type of salary yet.

Also, if LSU is smart, they'll give him a 2 year contract at most.

Yeah, I realize his doesn't have a ton of experience coaching yet. He did stints as an intern with the Steelers and the NFL minority coaching clinic before working at Eastern Michigan this year. If I'm Miles I would probably like to at least interview him and see what coaching knowledge he could bring. Recruiting- you've got to think that kids would identify with a young AA guy who was in the NFL for 10 years. Miles was an assistant at Michigan when he was a player, so he may know enough about him from that.

Again, there is a lot more to recruiting than just having been a pro. It's a nice feather in your cap as a recruiter, but their is a whole lot more important factors.

Coaching skill
Personality
Dealing with parents
Winning/Earning trust
Ability to sell the program

You have to think of it two ways:

1) He's not going to be recruiting purely our running backs, he'll be recruiting a region, so why would a WR, DT, LBer, etc recruit care that this dude played running back in the pros?

2) He hasn't proven ANYTHING as a coach yet. When our guys try to recruit running backs, the families are going to expect someone who can coach. I don't think Porter was a great coach at all, but he'd been a coach at other major places and had successful running backs before coming to LSU. Big difference.

Not that I am for him but Porter's experience was not much better before coming here. Porter was at Arkansas St. then with Miles at OSU from 2002-2004 and he seemed to turn out pretty damn good, recruiting wise. I think it helps that he was a known name and played at one of the all time premier college programs plus the fact he was in the NFL for 10 years. I also am pretty sure he can/would relate pretty good with the young guys he would be recruiting ala Porter!

#1 because his resume is impressive and he is getting some good experience cutting in his teeth as we speak. All coaches have to get their start somewhere and he is getting his and his contacts and back ground are really solid.

#2 Because I have met and talked with him before and he seemed like a level headed and good guy and was easy to talk too. From what I remember of him I think LSU could do a lot worse. Coaching RB's is probably the easiest position to coach to be quite honest with you. It's a position that many coaches get their start at. Not to mention the guy was a stand out RB and played in the league so I'm sure he knows his stuff and thats just common sense based on who he is.
