Should Miles, as the head coach, be absolutely sure of the clock at all times? I need to understand how he could have failed so miserably.

Yes, if not directly,indirectly. In basketball there is some asst,or Grad Asst assigned at all times to be aware of timeouts. I can't imagine its any different in football.
And even if we had had 2 timeouts left with :26,why do you let 17 seconds evaporate before using one of them ?

I can think of one reason, namely that nobody expected LSU to go 26 yards to get the first down and *not* score. In which case you don't want to give Ole Miss time to do anything with it.
But it sounds from the coaches' commentary that, no, that wasn't really the plan.
