Losing to Houston Nutt three years running is hardly the way to gain favor in Baton Rouge. Ole Miss has now won two in a row against LSU. Arkansas goes for an unconscionable three this coming weekend. My how the mighty have quickly fallen; General George Patton quite possibly said it best, "All glory is fleeting." For Les Miles, and his embattled offensive coaching staff, the glory enjoyed in the wake of a 2007 National Championship has faded as quickly as LSU's 2009 BCS bowl chances. Now Miles faces his toughest test as the LSU head football coach—survival, and to do so may require another Draconian firing of yet another incompetent coordinator.

In this piece for TigerDroppings.com, the World Wide Web's exclusive nook for all things SEC and LSU, we'll examine the to-date performance of the LSU Football Team, discuss possible firings at the end of the regular season, and weigh in on the nation's most intense and storied rivalry, the unrivaled Iron Bowl.

Just Plain Offensive

The National Player of the Year, the fastest human to ever wear pads, an assortment of receivers Gary Danielson calls unequivocally "the SEC's best" and an offensive line the head man called his "best since he's been here. With all of this, Gary Crowton could do little. A year ago, LSU's defense was the problem. This year it is the offense. One can only wonder if the problem stems from the head coach—and that complacency has finally eclipsed perseverance in Baton Rouge, rendering the Tigers to de facto middle of the pack league status for the remainder of Miles' tenure.

Oz Revealed

You may have seen the movie starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. Set mainly in Louisiana's notoriously renowned Angola Penitentiary, "Dead Man Walking" was the story about a St. Martinville, Louisiana native who viciously murdered two high school sweethearts from New Iberia. After raping the girl in front of the boy, the repeat offender killed both youngsters in what was later described as a most vicious scene.

The story's title referred to the convicted murderer's terminal plight on Louisiana's Death Row facility at "The Farm." When Penn, who played the role of the inmate sentenced to die in the electric chair was escorted out of his cell by prison guards to meet his eternal fate, the words "Dead Man Walking!" reverberated loudly across the cell block. It signaled the beginning of a morbid, but necessary ritual.

Unfortunately, for Gary Crowton, he is now effectively LSU's counterpart of Sean Penn in the aforementioned movie, as it is certainly a given that he will soon be gone. Crowton's unforgivable, unthinkable crime, if you will, was that he led this plethora of offensive talent to a 11th place ranking in league offensive totals and 106th in the nation. The Wizard, just like in another, even more-famous movie, now wears no clothes. Crowton's presence, like LSU's once-potent offense, is severely weakened. A change is sorely needed. Moreover, without one, Miles' future at LSU becomes even more uncertain than it already is.

Miles Overdue

At this point in the season, given the Tigers' 7-3 record, Miles needs to come clean and admit that he and his staff cost the Tigers the Ole Miss game. Losing to Alabama and Florida is not shameful. Those are two undefeated teams knocking on the door of a national championship. However, losing to Ole Miss because you cannot effectively manage the clock or call running plays when you are already in field goal range is inexcusable. These days, it's obviously not easy being Les Miles.

The Iron Bowl

The general outlook on this year's Alabama-Auburn game is that Alabama is just too powerful for Auburn. However, Bama struggled with Ole Miss while Auburn put them away easily. This is of course is a game in which you can usually expect a few surprises. Auburn has had a solid year under Chizik, who appears to be a much better hire than originally thought. Chizik has not only improved on last year's losing effort under Tuberville, he has demonstrated a recruiting knack by plucking some of the state and the region's best talent from the clutches of his Tuscaloosa nemesis. However, the ultimate test for any Auburn or Alabama coach, of course, is the Iron Bowl.

Alabama will be a prohibitive favorite in this contest. Like Florida, they have knifed through their respective division competition with relative ease and impunity. Alabama is more physical than Auburn, and they have more to play for, with a national championship spot looming large on their future horizon—if of course, they can better Florida in Atlanta.

My guess is that with an extra week to prepare Auburn will keep this game close—closer than Bama fans will like it, forcing a tough fight for the championship-minded Crimson Tide. Nevertheless, this is a great opportunity for Chizik and his Tigers. The Tide will likely take them lightly, and if there were ever a chance at an upset, this would be a good time, as the Tide has to be looking ahead toward playing Florida and Everybody's All-American, Tim Tebow, who is oddly Mark Ingram's toughest competition in the ongoing Heisman Trophy race.

It's frustrating to think that we were in field goal range after the Lafell catch & run, and pissed it away with the playcalling.

I'm glad the heat is on. It's time. Most have been pretty hopeful that we would finish the year on a high note but what happened at the end of last year is happening all over again and it's unacceptable. 7-8 over the last two years in the SEC is also unacceptable and cannot continue. If it does, Miles needs to get the boot quickly. If we lose to Arkansas, he should basically get an ultimatum from the AD, either win the west next year or you're out! We've come too far this decade as a program to slide back into mediocrity and irrelevance and sadly, that's what's happening.

Regardless of the outcome against Arkansas, he should get an ultimatum from the AD.

Well, that wasn't the one I had in mind. Mine was more like "Either resign now or you're fired".

Of course it can. All we have to do is keep Miles as our head coach, and it is guaranteed to continue.

Obviously we haven't.

I hate to be a grammar cop, but you're using the wrong verb tense here. Past tense is the appropriate one in this sentence.

"The Tide will likely take them lightly"

No way this happens. They beat us 6 yrs running until 08. They are owed some asswhippings for many years.

You know I've been critical and thanks for not banning me BTW, but I just can't see him recovering from this.

I think GC is a solid coordinator but requires a Matt Flynn type qb. That would mean a guy w/ a high football iq. Jefferson has improved but he's not they type of qb that can take over and make a decision. He is simply an average play executer. But w/o a Matt Flyn type QB, GC is not going to be successful.

But those are symtoms of the larger problem. The larger problem is that LM's resume did not even warrant an interview for this job much less the awarding of this job. When he had Saban coached players he backed into an MNC. But, neither he nor his staff has coached anyone up and the battle at the los has been lost consistently for the last two years.

Further, w/ the national damage this weekend, I can't see him recovering.

That's putting it mildly. I've never been so horrified by a football game. I was like watching a train wreck.

Consider this:

Against GA we had to have a TD and we ran.

Against OM we had to have an FG and we passed.

can't run it. youve gotten 5 straight blitzes up the middle, cant run the ball up the middle againsts a blitz with your 4th string rb. cant roll out cause your qb's ankle is hurt. take the snap, make the drop, no ones open so throw it away. not your job to make a play out of nothing; its your job to not lose yards. the last play was designed to throw it to the endzone, they got a blitz. great call by ole miss to blitz, had to turn it loose half a second too early and was 6 yards short. lost a close game; get over it.

and just to end speculation. les is going no where. if you want to win a nc, you have to win twelve games in the toughest confrence in the country. you can loose one but have to win the rest, including the best the other side of the conference has to offer. he wins ten games a year and looses a game for us in 5 years. steve spurrior lost fla a lot of games and nc titles in ten years. if anyone thinks this program, or any program in the sec is better than ten wins a year, then find a new coach. i'm not going a long for that ride. unless it's steve himself or will muschamp, i'm out. just back the basketball and baseball squads.

Well, Guava, I may be misinterpreting your statement, but Florida and Bama are over 10 wins. And they do it playing fundamental football (establish the run and stop the run). Nothing fancy, like the jack of all trades, definitly master of none Gary Crowton. Specs1 said that Crowton needs a Matt Flynn to be successful, why not use our other athletes. He just needs to coach according to his QB's abilities, meaning don't call plays that JJ can't handle because you think Flynn could handle em.

This is the only loss you put on Miles and the coaching staff's collective heads? Are you serious? Oh yeah, and correct me if I'm wrong but we haven't won 10 games this year. I'm not sure we will even get there. Oh yeah, and what was our record last year...somehow 10 wins doesn't seem to ring a bell there either.

Crowton is a complete failure as an OC. The no-huddle gimmick has been a huge flop. With a new QB and young players, he should have never kept up the nonsense. Talking about a lack of intellectual flexibility - doesn't work, try something different. Most of the plays are called in late, the O has no time to think or prepare - thus the "predictable" calls. It has NOTHING to do with JJ or anyone else on the field, those guys are excellent athletes and would thrive under a gifted coach. If GC doesn't go, then Miles needs to hand over the great guys he's recruited to someone who knows what to do with them.
