youve got to be kidding.

chavis had top 10 defenses consistently at tenessee. with the UT talent he had top 10 Ds. this is the first year with his scheme and every single player including the juniors and seniors who had learned malvettos scheme had to re learn a whole new defense. typically, starters are juniors and seniors. so when these freshmen have been in the system for 2-3 years theyll know the ins and outs of it, and will be able to execute it. also, with the talent we reel in we're going to have great D. its way to early to tell whether he was the right call or not, but as of now, no one should be complaining. idk what you people expect

I agree about getting pressure and sacking the qb. I want to see more of that. Maybe in year 2 with the young DEs and LBs we will see more pressure, but I think he has done a great job this year.

His defense kept us from being blown out in the 3 loses.

Yes he's more than the answer. The defense is just staying on the field too long. This is what he had to deal with in UT the last few years.

Great defense. The offense just couldn't do shite.

This typifies our idiot fan base.

I am not a Chavis fan at all..read / react is not my thing...

Having said that, he has been a big improvement over last year and in fairness, he needs to stay and see what he can do with one more year.

I also have mixed feeling about Ron Cooper...
somethings have improved, but there are a lot of blown assignments.

The defense has not been a problem. Scheme wise I think Chavis has done a decent job. I have said it before but this team consistently runs by people and misses a lot of tackles. Generally he has the players in the right places to make plays but sometimes it does not happen. Each game we have been a couple of plays, that could have easily been made, away from having far better stats.
We are not even going to mention having to be on the field so much!

Other than Peterson I think the rest of the guys playing D are over rated, including #3. CJ is a great athlete, but as a junior he is far from a great safety, and the other corners/safeties are very average. I think the LB's are a pretty good group, just tend to over run a lot of plays. The D line is nothing special across the board. Given this, I think Chavis has done a pretty dang good job, especially with the probs on O. I mean getting the ball 8 possessions a game? Your D better be like the old lights out Ravens group to beat strong competition given that scenario.

Hell, until late in the second Q the D scored as many points as the O.

Personally, I don't like his style of defense. The other team is able to convert too many 3rd and longs, and even if we eventually stop the other team, they are deep in our territory. Add to this that because we allow so much yardage and time of possession to the other team, our offense does not have as many plays to score as our opponents.

You have to give Chavis some cedit, he came in and took over a defence that was poorly coached and they have gotten better all year. He has done a good job with what he has. They have been on the field way to much this year.

His defensive scheme has been great all year
I think the word "great" is being overused and thus rendered meaningless. I think a more accurate description of our Chavis defense is "ok" to "good" -- a definite improvement from Malveto. But great, no. Our 2003 defense was as close to great as I've seen at LSU. Definitely better than anything we've seen this year.

I want to see a chavis defense with a halfway decent d line that doesn't get dominated every play.

I'm not sure chavis is the problem. we have a pretty weak d-line. as good as it was 2003-2007 it has been equally bad 2008-2009. the d-line gets pushed around every game. we're undersized and bringing one or two extra guys on a blitz isn't nearly as effective as it should be. chavis can't really help that. i believe for the most part he's put his players in a position to make a play/tackle. i think we need to get better and stronger and hopefully our young guys will come along next year. woods was a bust and as much character and heart i think alexander has he's not half of what he once was. our ends are undersized and really not very fast other than alem but he shoots ten yards into the backfield on every down taking himself out of the play. i'm just extremely frustrated with lsu football right now. kinda glad basketball season is here.
