Being an LSU Tiger fan since the mid 70s(second game to ever watch in Tiger Stadium was USC Trogans in 79) I have witnessed many hi's and low's.I've decided to put together a recap of each decade from 1970 to now.
The 70s
Coach=Cholly Mac
record=76-37
SEC record=35-22-1 *only 6 SEC games per year
bowl appearances 5 record 1-4
top 10 finishes=1-7th
The 80s
coaches
Jerry Stovall,Bill Arnsparger,Mike Archer
record=70-41-5
SEC record=35-23-4 * 7 SEC games played
bowl appearances=5 record 1-4
top 10 finishes=1-5th
The 90s
Mike Archer,Curley(we are running the ball down Aurburn's throat at Auburn leading by three scores so let's start throwing the ball late in the second half so Auburn can get 3 picks for TDs to beat us)Damn it,after all that,I still refuse to say his last name,Gerry DiNardo
record=54-58-1
SEC record=31-46-1 *mostly 8 SEC games
bowl appearances=3 record 3-0 Just for the record,2-Indy wins and a Peach,don't get too excited.
top 10 finishes=Anyone,Anyone,Anyone
The 2000-now
coaches
Nick Saban,Les Miles
record=98-29
SEC record=56-25
bowl appearances=9 record 7-2
top 10 finishes=5-2001 7th,2003 1st NC,2005 5th,2006 3rd,2007 1st NC,*(2009 currently 8th and with three more wins could finish in the top 5).
Saban put this program where it is and deserves more credit.Miles has kept it there.I know that hurts the Miles haters,but,it's a fact.
So there you have it.
People who remember from the 70s have witnessed so much.An unbelievable road.
From the 80s,good football to absolute horror to a decade of dominance.
The 90s,OK,OK lets forget about the 90s,then,the decade of dominance.
From the 2000s,you bunch of spoiled whiny little brats who have no clue of what real pain and misery of being an LSU fan is all about,oh and yes the decade of dominance.

Totally agree.
Archer, Hallman, Dinardo. Folks better be careful wishing for a coaching change.
Ask Michigan and ND.

If you run off a coach from your program after winning a NC, and finishing in the top 5 w/ top 5 recruiting classes, you tend to scare off a oflot qualified choices.
Reiterate: Michigan and ND also hired coaches " better than Archer, Hallman and Dinardo" .. Pete Carrol is pretty good to.

That was Weiss' first head coach gig, nobody knew how he would do.

my intent to this thread was to expose just how irrational some have become.We are in a position to finish in the top 10 maybe top 5.That's with the fact we are third in our own conference.With all the critisism Miles has gotten we are still in that position.Were we better than Florida or Bama,no.The fact that Miles and Co. didn't do a masterful job and pull off wins against the #1 and #2 teams in the nation is reason for some to bitch.Call me a fool,but,Miles is welcome here for as long as he wants.

Great post. I ve made the same point many times.
I still have nightmares about that damned game! While watching it, my wife (who is a loyal fan, but understands as much about football as I do about astrophysics) say "Why the hell are we still throwing the *&%#ing ball?"
We got beat in that game and Auburn's offense never scored a touchdown.

But more thanks to Coach Saban. Got us to where we are now. Miles has (somewhat) maintained what Saban built. There's no denying that.

"Somewhat" Miles has a slightly better record overall,bowl games and top 10 finishes.Slightly less in SEC record.Yes,Saban was and will be a better coach than Miles.What do you suggest,in you expert football mind,Miles should do.If you are a Miles Hater just say it,don't hide behind "somewhat"
