There is less daylight north of us in fall/winter....barely gets light in Alaska

It has to do with approaching the winter solstice. Longer dark hours and shorter daylight as the earth's tilts away from the sun in the N hemisphere in the Fall/Winter.

Louisian is close to he time zone border. If you went to west until just east of El paso you'd still be in same time zone but near 1,000 miles away so sun would arrive later there.

I lived in Egene for 3 years. It is pretty much dark all the time from October to April/May. Once the rain season starts, no more sunlight.

JPH is right on this one. The closer to the poles you get the shorter the days are as compared to the equator where the days are almost exactly 12 on and 12 off.
