Charles, I agree with everything, particularly the defensive strategies. Except I do disagree on one thing, but that’s because I am feeling crazy radical, and I know it probably won’t happen.
Instead of going max protect, go four wide. Saban loves to blitz and pressure the QB, and the standard response is to drop guys back to protect the QB. But let’s face it, our o line isn’t very good even if we go to max protect. You’re not buying any additional time. Saban takes the chance his guys can hold man coverage before the QB has to force the ball.
Instead of reacting defensively, attack the weakness of the scheme. Flood the secondary with receivers and you are certain to have safeties on wide receivers. If one of our physical receivers breaks a tackle, there is no help because they are all in the backfield. Accept that we can’t protect JJ and instead practice throwing the ball quickly on short routes to guys in single coverage. Make Bama pay for blitzing.
