re: Column: The case for Jarrett Lee

You nailed it Carl. Miles is scared. Of a QB controversy or Lee's failure or both. Jefferson has been coached scared, if you want to call it conservatively, so be it. He has bought in to the approach, maybe too much. Now what? They have either got to get him to perform at a reasonable level or make a change. It is just a terrible predicament for Jefferson, Miles, Crowton, and Lee. What to do?

The point is that Matt Flynn and Matt Mauck were more mature leaders than JR AND JJ's not talking to the media shows that he may not be as mature a leader as JL at this stage of his career.
Leadership is vital to a winning program.
I'm not ready to throw JJ out either and I'm not sure if JL wouldn't throw another pick 6. I do believe that Les needs to give JL a series to see if he's improved under pressure, especially if we're repeatedly going three and out.

I have not read this whole thread so if I am being a repeater, you can slam me. I agree with some Miles and staff are scared to play Lee. If he fails they look stupid for playing him, if he does well, people will say where was this all year. JJ is not an SEC qb, he would kill on lower levels like 1-aa, or maybe even in the sun belt or lower 1-a conferences. This year has been a total reversal of last year. Last year they over loaded Lee, and now they have dumbed it down so much for JJ, that the offense has sputtered. Lee is the qb IMO, who can give this team the best chance to be successfull and with him the playbook will open up. But anyway go Tigers and lets see how it plays out, the rest of this year will be very interesting.

And i previously stated to this same thought, i was concerned when it came out that for the Georgia game, when a play action pass was called, JJ suggested to run Scott. Now it worked out that Scott broke one, but i think a leader wants the ball in his hands to win the game.

This is so fricking stupid it hurts my brain. JJ is clearly an SEC QB. You know how I know this? Because he is the fricking starting quarterback for LSU, who PLAYS IN THE frickING SEC. It's not even an opinion--it's a fricking fact. And you dumbasses who continue to spout this retarded-arse "__is not an SEC QB" phrase seem to think the SEC is littered with a bunch of Peyton Mannings. It's not. Typically there are a few good QBs, a few bad ones, and the rest are pretty average. Ryan Mallet may very well be the only current SEC QB to start an NFL game. He, Tebow, and Snead might be the only 3 to even make an NFL roster.

I may be wrong--though I doubt it--but I sense some racist undertones here.
I have no problem with Lee playing--I was one of his biggest defenders over the summer. But I do have a problem with our fans being fricking stupid. And there's a lot of fricking stupid in this thread.

how many SEC teams would like to have JJ and a 5-1 record. I'd say 9.

Hot Carl, every one is entitled to their opinion. So back the frick up you a-hole. No racist under tones you clown. IMO, he SHOULD not be a starter in the SEC. You have your thoughts I have mine. Hey at one time Melvin Hill was a starter in the SEC as was Seth Adams and countless other shitty qb's just because they started in the games does not make them worthy of it.

I'm not sure if this has been brought up or not, it just seems to me that the running game is suffering because we have a QB that is having trouble. It looked like Florida lined up to stop the run and dared JJ to beat them....and he didn't. He looke confused for the entire game (save one drive that stalled). I'm no expert but I think Lee could at least make some throws downfield (although sometimes dangerously) instead of zipping them 10 yards passed the receiver...just a thought.

Lee played poorly for much of 2008, but he wasn't worse than Jefferson in 2009
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Say what???
Look, if he is an LSU guy I'm pulling for him to do well and I don't care who gets the job done as long as it gets done.
Having said that, I can't agree with your statement. I'm no expert, but each QB has had 8 starts and Lee is 4-4 with 14 TDS, 16 ints, and 7 of those were returned for TDs.
JJ is 6-2 with 11 TDs, 3 ints, and none returned for TDs.
I done see how we can just gloss over 13 more ints with 7 resulting in quick 6 TDs and say: " Lee played poorly for much of 2008, but he wasn't worse than Jefferson in 2009".

you have to admit those are two totally different times and teams...what that other person said i think was taken a little out of context..Lee was absolutely thrown to the wolves...Jefferson was handed the ball and told, theres nobody left make us proud...One had immense pressure the other had none. plus one had a defense the other didnt) Hence, thats what the whole article is about. (and by the way, fantastic article carl, I harldy ever reply to anything but I had to comment this time...I said these things months ago.) Jefferson is going through what lee did last year and he's not handling it as well as lee did, ala no talking to the media. Miles saw all of this coming and thats why jefferson hasnt thrown as many picks as lee,(protecting JJ) and thats why the offense is so anemic and predictable... Last year I was the one saying leave lee in there let him learn and now we have to go through all of this again this year...horse shite!!! put lee back in and let him reap the rewards, he already had his pitfalls.. Jefferson is scared, lee isnt, because he's been there!!! and thats called experience!!!
And Carl was right on target about les miles, now he's thinking about his job, he thinks he can squeek by with 9-3 and 10-3 bowl game victory and his job is safe...which it could be with JJ and great defense...he's not gonna risk another 8-5 season which is what he COULD get switching..not saying that would happen, but he knows he can win 9 hiding JJ..and playing good defense.(even though he could possibly win a NT with JL and RS...So he's kinda thinking whats best for him and not whats best for the team kind of deal...which everyone is prone to do...I just hope he gives Lee the first half against auburn...because millions of people know besides les miles that if you leave JJ in your gonna lose another 5 games coming real quick....Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Bowl game...the kid just cant do it...At the least...not yet...I believe Lee can... As well as Sheppard..

Frankly, this is a TEAM effort and JJ has been ab average QB...
the 5-1 record is for the TEAM not JJ...
Once could argue that if better QB was at the helm, we could have scored 10+ more points against FL
it is a LOOONG leap to say we are 5-1 because of JJ

Play JL and LSU would have been the laughing stock of the media world last week.JJ played a good game.JJ had 2 seconds to throw most of the night.
Tebow had a minimum of 4seconds to complete passes,i.e.TD(they got away with the jersey pull too)in fact when he had completions he had all the time he needed-no pressure.LSU 's possession after FL TD, JJ had a rare 4sec ,but everybody was locked down. In fact the 1 INT he pitched ,he threw it the way some claim, he needs to throw, before the receiver makes his turn, and what happened,he threw to the side line TT stops 3 yds away from line.In fact when TB had 3 sec or less he failed-was bailed out in 3rd,at their 35yd with a face masked call, which kept that drive alive. In fact TB threw that INT in 4th becauce he had 2 sec to throw, 2 sec is all of JJ's game experiences except for rare times. The option JJ vs TB's, JJ ran it very good, with timed pitches , but once the tight end, #18, did not get to the outside to block, other times FL was to quick and unblocked(i.e. LSU #68 once). the laughter would have started in the beginning of Sec half for sure when ,with LSU on their approx 5,the play comes in after JJ starts the count ,and it's a pass to BL on the side, but FL changed to a zone,JJ did not force it, for the JL. He got sacked in 2-3. sec. Also In that drive #78 did not even touch a FL defender 3 times in a row on blocking .
The worst INC of the game he had was a ball thrown behinded BL, but CS got the first on a screen play the next play. All in all in the strech False starts by , #78,#68,LH., along with dropped passes by TT and TH killed the drive -not JJ . Holes were closed for running backs with LSU's downed lineman,i.e., #73 and #70 thru out the game.In fact the most crucial mistake was made when TB 25 yd run in their TD drive,in the first half. LSU had him potentially cornered on the side line.
One def ran to position on the sideline, the other #95 followed him like attached twin ,instead of position himself to trap TB.
U got to be ill if U think JL for JJ

You may be right about backups not getting much playing time, but that's because the starter needed it.
quote:
Year after year, Miles doesn't get his backup QBs much
JR - Sophomore year starter, needed to get playing time
Flynn - backup turned Senior starting QB, needed playing time
Perrilloux - had meaningful snaps in 07
Hatch - needed pt
Lee - needs pt
Jefferson - needs pt
Shepard - needs pt
So with the 7 QBs we've used in four and half seasons, exactly which one should have been benched for the development of others?
quote:
But, it's been Miles general MO ever since arriving in BR.
The longest tenured starting QB for Miles was JaMarcus Russell: TWO SEASONS. I think it's a difficult situation.
if you want to talk about a coach with an MO for not getting their backup snaps, his name would be Urban Meyer.
