LSU Defense

I've been thinking lately of our poor offensive production, and I have come to the conclusion that it may not be 100% the offense and coaches fault. Yes, I know that 109th in the NCAA is absolutely terrible (especially with our talent), but I heard a stat from the game Saturday that said we only had 47 offensive plays.
The defense has played very good since the Washington game. They held a great team in Florida to 13 pts which is awesome, but it seems we have this bend but don't break attitude to our defense. I guess this is Chavis's philosophy. I'm not sure, but when teams can sustain drives for a long period of time our offense isn't going to have as many opportunities. This may have been a reason why Russell Shepard did not play in the game Saturday. I still think he should have had a few snaps even though we only had 47 plays.
I would like to see a little more aggressiveness so that we can have more 3 and outs and force a few more turnovers.
With that said I am very happy with the scoring defense. I am very dissatisfied with the offensive management by the coaches and players. Maybe it is just the offense's fault by not sustaining drives that we only had 47 plays. It could be the mixture of the defense and offense. Maybe a lack of big plays in special teams. I don't know for sure.
We should scrap the no huddle BS and start trying to make plays instead of afraid of making a mistake (JJ holding on to ball and getting sacked).
Lets step it up against the Barn this next week and lets support the team no matter how difficult it gets this season.

it is all related.
Our defense is much better than last year, but not yet on par with the elite defenses in the league (BAMA and FLA).

Yea i agree. Holding florida to 13 pts is good, but they had a good bit o yardage against us.

this is in no way the defenses fault.. if anything, its the other way around.. if the offense can do anything at all, it picks up first downs, which get you more plays.. instead, its running 4-6 plays a drive and giving it right back to the UF offense..

Football is the ultimate team sport. A good defense will get the ball to the offense often and typically with pretty good field possession. Likewise, a good offense will convert on third down and sustain some drives and give the defense some rest.

I never said it was the defenses fault.

Chavis has a read and react. I am willing to give it a year, but if it doesn't get better next year, back to square one. We need an attacking style defense, not Lou Tepper 101.

I think it is both- defense could get off the field quicker and the offense needs to keep the ball longer, which would obviously sway TOP in our favor. We currently have the ball less than our opponents.

Yea. This may be because of our lack of running game that we are so used to seeing. But we didn't have a lot of success throwing against florida either so maybe that's why.

Def. the lack of running game, and in the past, Saban's and Pelini's defense did get off the field quickly most of the time, giving more possessions to the O.
The defense to me still looks like it is improving, so I'll be patient and see what happens.

Well now that I know the yardage they put up, I agree that is excellent. I probably just though it was more because their drives always seemed to last a good bit of time.

I'm happy with them, not that I matter. It seems easier to accept the limitations of the lack of pass rush when the defense still has overall success.
Watching the Colts in primetime the past month has been a great example of how the offense and defense affect one another. Against the Dolphins in a close game, the D was on the field all night. However, when blowing out the Titans, the offense had in effect forced the Titans to become one-dimensional and really helped the Colts D.
Playing from ahead is huge, but LSU hasn't found itself in that spot enough.

It was just that they always had the ball due to all of the offensive 3 and outs. They had the ball for 9 minutes more than LSU did in the second half alone.

Thanks but no thanks on your definition of attacking. My definition is causing turnovers which right now I believe is up to 11 or 12. LSU is +7 in turnover margin, near the top of the entire nation. Attacking just for the sake of throwing a bunch of players at the LOS is useless. What counts is how many points are scored and how many extra possessions you give the offense via turnovers.
Chavis grade -- A+

Agreed. Florida had one more possession. LSU's offense simply sustained only one drive in the game, hence the huge gap in the number of plays. Little things could have made a difference. They just didn't make plays. For instance, Trindon Holliday runs a quick stop and go route, defensive back on an island missed the tackle leaving nothing but green in front of Trindon. But he forgot to secure the ball, incomplete pass. Granted, there were not many such opportunities but you get the point. Championship teams make the most of each opportunity given. The asinine penalties, poor pocket presence, mediocre blocking, questionable play-calling etc. just can't happen if you're going to pull the upset. Let's face it, this far into the season those things should not be happening when you have above-average talent. Furthermore, leaving some of the more-talented players on the bench while you continually shoot blanks offensively is beyond reason to me.

We had 4 turnovers against MSU and I think 2 against ULL. We got only 1 turnover in the UGA game and that was when the game was pretty much game, set, match to LSU. When I said attacking defense I don't mean just "throwing" people at the line of scrimmage. I see it as seeing a weakness in the offense and blitzing there. Not sitting back and waiting for the offense to do their play. I don't think we should blitz every play though. We have to stay disciplined.
I am not criticizing the defense, but just saying that we have to generate some better pressure on the QBs in passing situations. Overall, the defense has played well. They can play better and they are improving. B+

I think what has been forgotten in this thread is that, except for the td drive, which should have been negated had the ref called the penalty, Fla.s drives were sustained by penalties.
Alem has been lining up that way all season yet only in this game were the penalties called. The Fla. center moving his head just before the snap which was finally called in the 2nd half-why not from the start of the game?
I'm not saying that the refs cost us the game. Certainly the facemask penalty that kept alive a scoring drive helped and was warranted. My point is that their keeping the ball so long might not have occured had certain events outside of the d's play helped them along.
On the other hand, they can't do a damn thing with the ball if they don't have it.
