An Infrequent Poster's Attempt at Rational Thinking

I read The Rant daily but rarely post and think this may be my first thread to start...but here goes. Here is my rational (at least in my opinion) take on the game last night and our team as a whole.
First, JJ is not the QB the media said, many tiger fans thought, and the rest of us hoped at the beginning of the season that he would be. He is just 19, so there is still plenty of time for him to improve, but he seriously crippled the Tigers last night with some inexperienced decisions (i.e. when it's 4th down there is never a reason to get sacked, throw the ball long and far and hope someone catches it!).
Second, we cannot run the options, period! Why we keep trying that play is mind-boggling. I guess it works in practice but it clearly does not work in the games. If that is all JJ can do, then lets put him back in the I-formation and run dives, counters, sweeps, and PAPs all day long. The I-formation is still a legitimate offense, regardless of what some on TD say. It's at least better than running the option like it's going to work.
Third, I think the offensive play calling is a mixture of my first point and some stubbornness/lack of imagination of our coaching staff. I think when you combine the poor play of our young OL with the inexperience of JJ then the coaches aren't left with much but they shouldn't be completely off the hook either.
Fourth, Chavis was a great hire and the LSU defense will be good for year to come. The one thing that will hurt the Defense in weeks to come is if the Offense can't stay on the field for more than a couple minutes at a time. The Defense's ability to fight fatigue will only get worse as the season wears on.
Fifth, I have no idea why RS didn't get in the game, but they should have at least tried to see if he brought a different look or tempo to the Offense last night.
Finally, I am not ready to give up on this team (or its coaches) but I do think we will need to improve on the offensive side of the ball as well as play calling to not drop the Bama game plus probably one or two more regular season games.
This is just the way I see it.

I like some of your points. I too think that they should play Russell Shepard more. I think we should use all our assets. If what we are doing does not work make a change. Maybe JJ is afraid to throw an interception and have the same reputation as Lee last year. He is young and trying to be careful.

definitley part of the problem!

Want to know why Russell Shepard didn't get into the game. Look at his fumbles/touch numbers. In a game where LSU couldn't afford a turnover that mattered (the INT with 22 seconds left in the half didn't matter when you have to try to get into FG range).

Either that fear comes from inexperience, which he will overcome with time, or that fear comes from lack of talent, and in that case we need to find a new QB. I'm hoping it's the first. He needs to learn that an INT is better than a 4th down sack.

Did I miss something? He has 1 fumble on the year.

I don't like the option but it did work at times in the other games. Florida's D pursued too well for it to work last night.

Imagine Sheppard and Randle played for the Gators.
Do you think they would have both played last night with Shepp playing like a Harvin role?

I can understand that all tiger fans are disappointed about yesterday’s loss. Any legit tiger fan should be. But consider this. I live, and have lived in Fla for more that 20 years. I have spoken with at least a half a dozen UF fans today. All of them are disappointed. You would think that they lost. They cannot understand how Florida had 2 weeks to prepare for this game, yet LSU held them to 13 points.
I saw an LSU tiger team that played hard all game. This year, I have never seen LSU so fired up for a football game. Maybe, on that night, Florida was just a better team
I may be wrong, but I recall a poll on this web site that indicated that most tiger fans thought LSU would lose 2 games this year. After watching LSU for the last for the last five games, did any rational LSU fan think that LSU could win? I, for one, am surprised the game was not much worse.
LSU has yet to play Alabama, who also has a week off before playing LSU. Yet, if they “win-out” the SEC west, they will get another shot at UF. The glass is still more that half full.
Just Sayin.

He had the pass receiving fumble and also the one on a run which I believe was overturned on review in the Georgia game. Lucky they had a good enough angle to overturn it...sometimes they don't.

Harwin had a bridle on him his TR FR season. As far as Florida goes, who has the better OL...LSU or Florida. That makes a huge difference in whether you play TR FR skill position players or not.

The biggest problem with the option, is the QB, JJ isn't an option QB. He's just not getting the ball to the RB in the right time frame. He's a little hesitant, and is either too early, or late with the toss.

Pretty spot on. I had high hopes for Jefferson, but as of now I haven't been impressed. I know he's young, but he stands in the pocket way too long. If he would just get rid of the ball sometimes, I think our offense wouldn't stall so much. Instead of 3rd and 15 we might have 3rd and 8.

Maybe, if LSU would have thrown more, they would have had more than just one interception.

I agree with everything you said but not blaming the team.
Of course you cannot blame the team, they are awesome. The blame lies squarely on the shoulders of Les Miles. Hes scared.

Agreed, in future games, the option should not be considered as an option.

I'd give your observations a C-

Another one liner for the ranters that hate to read more than one sentence at a time.

I'm tired of people making the excuse that Jefferson is just "young". That is complete bull and everyone knows it. People just don't want to admit that Jefferson is not that good or not as good as we thought. Just look at the difference in his play from the first game until now. He has not progressed at ALL. He's the same QB he was against Washington. And you can make the excuse "well he looks bad cause the offensive line did this..." no, there is no excuse. There were countless times last night that he had 5-7 seconds to make a decision after dropping back and failed. I think we need to really consider just putting someone else in and try and make something happen. Maybe not completely abandon him but at least do anything to try to get a spark. Whether it's playing Lee or Sheppard I don't care. Basically during this bye week, Crowton and the offense just need to go back to square one and completely retool this offense and simplify it greatly. I say bench Jefferson and put Lee in and run a simple power running offense similar to what Alabama runs. There is no reason to believe we can't do that. It is mainly run based with a lesser opportunity for throwing interceptions. I know everyone is biased against Jarrett Lee because of last season but honestly, what has Jefferson done? Maybe he hasn't thrown interceptions but he's taken just as many sacks to end drives as Lee's interceptions. It's not 2008, it's 2009. Give Lee a chance to win a game for us because Jefferson is honestly not working.
And for the others who will say "how could you be this upset for losing by 10 to the #1 team?" and that is because we had 160 yards of offense and scored only 3 points. That is absolutely NOT acceptable regardless of who your opponent is.
