if a guy gets injured in an offseason and never took a redshirt before, and he will miss 2 seasons, is it possible to have a regular RS and a medical RS?

I think so, but it is not acceptable to wear a red shirt with orange socks.

if you miss two years due to the same injury you can get a 6th year- ex. Charles Alexander at LSU

You get one redshirt year, doesn't matter if its medical or "just because you won't play and why waste a year" but say you then get hurt you can petition for a 6th year or basically another redshirt year.....They are very strict with this though and just don't hand them out.

Anytime you hear a player get a second redshirt it is always mentioned along with "the rare 6th year of eligibility"

Alexander's was actually 2 different injuries not in consecutive seasons. the scenario the OP describes kinda fits him, but really fits Kirston Pittman who essentially missed back to back years (I think he may have played a game in 05) but was out 05 and 06. in both cases, they were granted 6th yrs, not necessarily RS then med RS. you only get 5 to play 4, how that nonplaying yr is spent, be it for development (the traditional RS) or medical, is really kinda just terminology.
