Shooting from the hip here, but I think Florida actually won it in 1984, but was ineligible because of NCAA violations. LSU was co champions with someone else that year.

I didn't think it was 84 but maybe it was. I think we had the same record as Florida, but I guess they beat us. The title was taken away, but they didn't name us champions. Pissed me off.
ETA: Florida was 5-0-1, we were 4-1-1. We played in the Sugar Bowl.
