i've never responded to this thread,as many times as it has been posted.i do have a question though for you tiger fans.play the "what if" for a moment.what IF saban had never been hired? instead, they hired miles after your 2 losing seasons, instead. does anyone think he would have built it back as fast as saban. not a flame here,i like miles.in comparison,i think saban is a little better on the defensive side, but you guys have as much talent,if not more than we do.there is a 9 game difference in that comparison, but, saban always manages to lose to someone he is not suppose to:(

I don't think we'd be the program we are today.

I like Les, but I don't think he has/had the force of personality to make the kind of changes needed to get LSU where they are today.

Building that student academic center and Sabanville as it was called when it was being built are things that Saban had to piss folks off to get done, but it was a promise he foreced as a condition of his hire and he held them to it. You think those facilities help with recruiting.

He forced LSU to adjust the assistants pay scale so that we now have the best paid assistants in the country. Makes it a bit easier to make good hires.

He hired Tommy Moffit.

And he was a prick when he was here. I heard several stories, but if one dared make mention of them they were shouted down and ridiculed. Of course now they are welcome and encouraged.

But part of that being a prick is what got alot of things done that put us where we are today. I don't really think Les has the kind of personality that could have gotten those things done.

Perhaps it's best it happened the way it did. I think Les is really at a crucial juncture this year where he can prove he was the right man for that transition and continue this legacy into the future. I hope he can. I don't think it's a slam dunk done deal yet though as some do.

Geaux Les!!

Interesting question but not a fair comparison in 1999 when Saban was hired. At that point in time, Saban had 6 years of college Head Coaching experience and 3-4 years as an NFL DC. Miles had no HC experience, was a coordinator in college and a position coach in the NFL. He did do a decent job of turning around Ok St, so who knows, my feeling is no due to lack of experience at the time.

It is, however a moot point, since Les Miles would not have been a consideration at that point. The most likely candidates had we not hired Saban were Mark Richt and Rich Rod.
