i was listening to the post game show after Vandy. a few callers asked about Russell Shepard running the wildcat and they kept replying that it wasnt really a true wildcat. they kept saying we have yet to see the true wild cat offense with the "belly up" or something like that.

what does that mean?

Not exactly sure, but it could mean that thus far there hasn't been a man in motion or a dive man.

SFP seems to have a firm grasp on the wildcat, perhaps you should ask him. He will GLADLY give you his opinion.

I'm pretty sure there is usually a person in motion and a guy lined up(dive man) next to the "QB". We haven't seen that but for Arkansas D-Mac was the QB, felix the motion man, and hillis was the dive man. I'm thinking chuck scott or keiland as the dive with holliday in motion.

An athletic guy playing QB isn't the wildcat. Even if he runs with the ball, that still doesn't make it the wildcat.
Despite what everyone says all the time.

Edit: Watch the video. LSU doesn't do anything like that; we have no "Felix Jones" position. We just run a QB draw or an option from the shotgun with an athletic guy at QB.

Um i think you would definitley need a "athletic qb" to run a wildcat. if we did it with shepard or trindon (on the counter ) and keiland. I don't know anybody that could stop it for a whole game.

I hope miles and crowton have this under wraps. Because if miles doesn't, then um he is uh not using his players to the best of thier ability.

I also think with the athletes we have. We should run some form of the triple option until jefferson comes into his own.

And if i remember correctly there is a special package for shepard only. And he has been studying it for about a year

the wildcat is just what Florida has been doing with Tebow for 4 years! When Arkansas first started getting pub for it Mullin called up David Lee and ribbed him about how he was a thief. There's a little more to it than Jet, Power, and Counter now.

The Bash play has been used for a couple of years now. Think Zone read but in reverse. If the OL is blocking inside zone left a WR comes in Jet motion from left to right. If the right defensive end squeezes then QB gives on the jet.
If the end runs up field then the QB keeps it and runs inside zone.

Florida just gets to runa shite load of play actions off of it since they are doing it with an actual QB. That type of package is what we can look forward to with Shep once it gets rolling.

I don't understand the obsession with calling this offense the wildcat. Isn't this the same as the single wing?

yes, sfurnish it is but with zone/gap schemes instead of old school man blocking. the motion and play fake pressure is exactly the same as the old single wing. Florida is basically a spread single wing team.

wow. an actual answer to a question on the rant. So it gets its name from arkansas b/c they were the first school to run in recent history.

yeah, I'm new to posting. From here on out I'll try to do a better job of just giving out worthless smart arse comments to reasonable questions.

why do you think wildcat is an arkansas name?

It's probably not an Arkansas name originally since I saw Malzahn's (sp?) offense run it when he was in high school. I don't know wheere the "name" wildact comes from but Arkansas popularized the name at the collegiate level back in 2006. The media grabbed on to it and Arkansas was happy to look like innovators. As I said its the same stuff that Florida has been doing with Tebow for 4 years. It's just a bastardized version of the single wing/ wing T shite that's been around for 40+ years.

I don't know who originally came up with the name "wildcat".

I basically agree with your post but will add that someone needs to show JJ the proper way to run the option....moving toward the line of scrimmage instead of away from and forcing someone to try and tackle him. Get it to the pitch man before he is two yards from the side line. A lot of that has to do with blocking up front, but he does not do a good job of running the option. Properly run and blocked, KW or TH could get a butt load of yards
