Fat Hen Grill (review)

Went to the Fat Hen Grill on Citrus (Harahan) with my girlfriend for brunch this morning. Walked in and all the booths were full so we sat at the bar. They had a very lively and friendly staff. What I found pretty surprising is that the entire staff was white (not something I would expect at a diner in NOLA). The menu is pretty extensive since they serve breakfast/lunch/dinner all the time.
I ended up "making my own" order by ordering the Cajun Crawfish Benedict but instead of the Hollandaise sauce got the creamy crawfish sauce from their crawfish biscuit appetizer. It consisted of 2 crawfish cakes topped with 2 poached eggs and then covered in the crawfish cream sauce with a side of home fries. The cakes were good, the eggs were perfect, and the sauce was great. And the home fries had good flavor. This dish was excellent and probably the best brekfast/brunch dish I have had in New Orleans in a while and it was only $12.99!
My gf could not decide what she wanted so she ordered 2 things. She got the chicken fried steak and eggs breakfast and the whole wheat pancake. The chicken fried steak was very good and the sausage gravy they put on top was excellent. The pancake was HUGE! And by huge I mean probably no less than 14" in diameter. I'm not a big pancake person but it was good.
There were lots of things on the menu and not on the menu I wanted to try. (they had a oyster and bacon chowder special and a peanut butter pie I really wanted to try that were not on the menu) I will definitely be back! If you live/work in the area...I recommend you try it.

Been a big fan for a while. I wish they would take over the property on Carrollton and Claiborne that was once a convienent store. The meatloaf special is great and they have the best meatball sandwich in town.

I'm a sucker for a good meatball sandwich so I will add that to my list of things to try.

Their meatballs are made with ricotta cheese and are really great. I work in Harahan and the Fat Hen and Kim Anh are the only places, besides the Red Waqon that I spend my cash on.

What/where are these 2 places again?

They are basically across Jefferson Highway from each other. Red Wagon's best dish is the pannesd chicken po-boy with swiss. A truly great po-boy. Kim Anh is a Vietnamese place that automatically makes it the best place in Harahan. Neauxla, do you know where the Colonial Bowling Alley is? The Red Wagon is next door and Kim Anh is directly across the street.

Yeah, I know where that is. I'll have to check them out sometime. Thanks for the info. What do you recommend at Kim Anh?

Pho to start for your first meal. All of the Bun(vermicelli) platters are really good as well. They also have really good rice platters. Their fried rice is the best I have ever had. Try the rotisserie chicken rice platter.
