Halladay to the Rangers?

Reports are pretty strong out of Dallas that the Rangers are making a bid to acquire Roy Halladay.
Here's what they're saying:
DMN: Nolan really wants him
DMN: Blue Jays want Holland
This is a tough call for the Rangers. Obviously, you're probably going to have to give up two of the following: Neftali Feliz, Derek Holland, and Justin Smoak.

First, with each couple hours as the day progressed it seemed that Texas was emerging as the leading candidate to acquire Roy Halladay, an acquisition that would rank with Nolan Ryan and Alex Rodriguez in this franchise's history in terms of instant impact.

Keep Smoak and go get him Rangers! Milwoods contract is coming off the books, trade and resign Halladay. Question is would he resign? If not, dont do it.

One can hope it does, though.
I think if the Rangers want it to happen, it will. It just depends who they want to give up.
Surprisingly, they have indicated that money isn't an issue. I also think Halladay would waive his no trade.
Seems like Toronto really wants to move him.

Millwood is not coming off the books. He has an option if he pitches enough innings. He’ll be back next season.
Hmmm… Holland, Smoak, AND two prospects? That’s a hefty tag. If you trade Smoak, that means you believe Davis will turn it around. Holland is expendable if you keep Feliz. If the Rangers can pay the salary, they should do the deal. Chances to win a pennant don’t come around that often. Really, this highlights that they got burnt on Cliff Lee. He wouldn’t have cost as much in prosects or money, and he’s not a huge drop off from Halladay. Lee was a better fit given the Rangers dire financial situation.

Agreed. I guess its the cost of doing business.

Yeah..I know don't know. I would rather trade Smoak than Feliz or Holland.

I would rather trade Feliz. I think Holland could really, really do something special.

I can't dispute anything you are saying right here. You're pretty much spot on.

I agree with you on Holland vs. Feliz. I’d rather have Holland. But the Jays are specifically asking for Holland. I like Smoak, but I’m worried he’s never going to develop a pure power stroke for a first baseman. If Davis can learn to take a walk (a big if), he’s the more valuable player.

Even if its not Halladay, I think the Rangers are going to do something.

The one thing my Rangers need right now is a bat.
The arms and defense have been the strength of the team this year.
But man, getting Halladay and not being too fleeced has got to be a consideration.

how could they take on halladay's salary?

They aren't worried about 2010, but they are trying to get Toronto to take on the majority of the rest of the 2009 season salary.

I didn’t think they could. According to the Ticket, they can’t even afford grass seed and baseballs. So, if they add salary, I have no earthly idea how.
But I do disagree that the team needs hitting. The big narrative this season for the Rangers is “bad hitting, good pitching”. And it’s not true. For the record, runs scored vs. runs allowed:
RS/G: 4.88 (6th), AVG = 4.79
RA/G: 4.41 (4th), AVG = 4.69
They’ve been good at both. And with Davis out of the lineup, Hamilton healthy, and Kinsler (hopefully) out of his slump, the offense should reasonably be expected to improve in the second half. The team is being carried by a stellar bullpen and mediocre starting pitching. They need a starter more than anything. Halladay is a great move if they can afford it.

They ought to trade Feliz and DAVIS. frick keep Smoak. Smoak is like a chipper Jones clone at the plate.
If this trade happens I will punch something or someone. Holland will be good next year.
I say if the Bluejays turn down Feliz, Davis, and a lower ranked prospect then don't make the trade for a 3 month rental.
