This doesn't surprise me; the guy hasn't pitched in the big league in what, a year? They would have found something to send him down to AAA ball to get some work first.

They wouldn't have signed him if something serious came up in his physical. Even if he didn't have a "mild shoulder strain" he still probably wouldn't have been able to pitch for a few weeks at least.
