I was flying into Spokane, WA sunday night and sat next to the University of Idaho head coach, Robb Akey. He and I started shooting the bull and he asked where I was from. I told him baton rouge....blah blah blah.

We got in the subject of LSU and all. The first thing he said was how impressed he was with Russell Shepard when he saw him in a few HS games during his recruiting trips through TX. He told me we had a special young man that will be a Heisman winner and a first class guy from what he got out of Shep when he met him.

He also went on to say how he has met and worked with LM at some camps when Les as at OSU. He said LM would go out of his way to keep "class, dignity and respect instilled in the mind of his players" first and foremost. ......he said " We got a good one"

Just thought I'd share. It was a 2.5 hr flight so we covered a lot.

Anybody who watches or pays attention towards people can tell that Les is a high charater person with great integrity. Thanks for sharing your story.

no problem.

I'd honestly like to have that guy on our staff...he had a wealth of knowledge and even spoke about our defense this year and how he knew chavis.

The man sounded like he wanted to be here!

Alot of our rivals and even our own fans know very little about CLM's back ground and who he came up under coaching.

Good to hear...openings will always be available every few years. It's nice to know we have 'interns' gaining their experience elsewhere so they can move into the big leagues when ready and space is available.

100% Accurate
This past fall I coached a 6th grade football team and asked Shep to come out to practice one day and speak to the kids. He was more than happy to come out and did an excellent job pushing academics and even stayed to talk to each kids individually, take picters, and play catch with the kids.

Then in Decemeber he spoke again at our team banquit. Once again doing an excellent job. Right after he spoke all the kids and siblings ran up to Russell to get his autograph and he took the time to make sure every kid was taken care of and again stayed to talk to anyone who wanted to speak to him.

I have pictures of the banquit but I'm not sure how to post them on here...

Shep is going to arrive at LSU as a cult icon and leave as a legend.

For an LSU fan, we are very fortunate to be around for some of the greatest times for LSU in the three major sports. The thing that sticks out with me most is not just the wins, but the outstanding athletes on and off the field. But wait.... There is still much more to come.

Wow. I knew he was intelligent and well spoken, but he sounds like a high character man as well by that story.

The perfect antidote for the quarterback whose name must not be spoken.

Great times ahead.
