Didn't realize how aggressive his D is, he really does blitz a lot. Of course I've never really looked for it until now.

They just said Tenn was 6th in the nation last year in Total D. With the athletes we have, our D could be scary good.

ETA: He was coaching from the booth, will he do that here or sideline?

He has always had an aggressive defense. Did you not watch when we played tenn in the sec championship???? That was one of the most physical games i have seen, definitly a top 5. As far as the booth, we will see sept 5.
Personally I dont care where he is as long as we get back to knockin the hell out of people and our guys arent running around on the field like a chicken with its head cut off.

He is definitely an upgrade as well as I think the new position coaches on defense.

Now I will also point out that I never really feared the Vols defenses under Chavis, even in 2000 and 2001 when he had probably his best talent while he was there.

We played them 3 times in that span and I always felt we could move the ball on them and for the most part we did.

And there is a famous saying among Vol fans "3rd and Chavis" which I've heard was a reaction to his getting a bit conservative in those situations.

Having said all that I think he's as good as Pellini IMHO and we will be significantly better coached on the defensive side of the ball than we were last year...which is good.

I've always appreciated LSU's strong defense. There's nothing like a great defensive play to pump up the crowd.

LSU's identity has always been a stout Defense, which is what made last year so depressing. I look forward to returning to our roots and fielding an aggressive, hard-nosed D.

I'm not sure if he'll be coaching from the booth this year. He's been doing that for a long time.

We went from allowing just 164 points in all of 2006 to over 270 points in 2007, and no fan is ever happy about that.

I probably do too. While I think some fans put new coaches coming on pedestals a bit too much, so much so that they can't live up to that.

Chavis is not the Messiah, but he's a definite upgrade, now let's watch and hope for the best.

FWIW, I don't think that Bo Pelini was the Messiah either. I have confidence in Chavis. He'll keep us in the game as long as our offense shows up (which it did pretty well last year).

Neither did I. I thought of him as I thought of Jimbo, solid but not spectacular and I questioned several of his defensive game plans.

I can think of several games I thought the offense bailed him out of some curious defensive plans.

I do think he (Pellini) was a disciplinarian and had the respect of the players. You would even see him talking to offensive guys on the sidelines at times.

I think we missed that, and I understand Chavis demands that as well.

Again it will undoubtedly be an upgrade and I think he'll be at least as good as Pellini. But I do find some of the exuberance to be bit excessive, but we are fans are we not?

And it's as certain as the sun coming up tomorrow that our fans will question Chavis and his plans at times.

At times? The first "in game" thread will have the haters saying, "I told you so" after the defense gives up its first 1st down of the season.
