When would he have retired? Would he have won another title, or was he completely burned out? How else would the LSU/CFB landscape have been affected?

Fates to consider:
Bo Rein
Jerry Stovall
Arnsparger/Archer
Florida State (would we have gotten Bowden)

An unproven Jerry Stovall took the Tigers to the Orange Bowl; Rein would have had a shot at a national title.

I think that had McClendon not "retired," Rein would have ended up somewhere in the Big Ten with a couple rings on his fingers.

Charley Mac should have tried to find him a real good offensive coordinator, because he was a defensive coach . . . His teams always had great defenses, he Achilles Heel was, he could not beat The Bear.

This makes 1983-? very interesting. Could McClendon have competed with Auburn, Florida, and Tennessee in the 1980's? I see no reason why he couldn't have had one more good four-year span before being humiliated by Steve Spurrier in his final year or two.

He was a wonderful person. I briefly worked with his son-in-law at a Baton Rouge Engineering firm and got to meet Charley Mac in 1993. Real nice guy who bleed purple and gold, even after he was forced out at LSU.

One of my best friends went to LSU thanks to Mac's scholarship fund (son of a former player). In 2001, I first developed my football ranking system (lots and lots of math ), and I had LSU ranked in the top ten with three losses. I kept telling people that we'd win the SEC title game and go to the Sugar Bowl, but nobody believed me. My friend visited McClendon on Friday, December 7, in the hospital, and told him what I'd said. My friend brought back a note written to me:
quote:

xiv,

You are a great Tiger. We will be #1. We ARE #1.

Coach Mac
He died the next day. I tear up every time I see that note.

"...he could not beat The Bear."

Who did "beat The Bear" at Bama during that period?

Mac's fate was/is the same as many coaches who experience a drop off in production after a making a big time run in excellence. Anyone checking out his record will note pretty much a nite and day difference between the results of his first 10 yrs and his last 5 or so.

Not to be morbid, but would he have been on that plane instead of Bo Rein?

Why would that have changed? According to Bowden winning the LSU game in '79 basically saved him at FSU. We hired a new coach again in '84.

That is really cool. Mac, because of his record against the Bear, was not fully appreciated by all LSU fans. But he was an excellent football coach.

Too many variables in this scenario. If Coach Mac would have beaten USC in '79, he probably would have not been forced out. LSU would have gotten better than the Tangerine Bowl and recruiting would have been better for '80... but we still would have beat Fla. St down in '81! God, I love that game from Dalton Hilliard.

Pure magic with him scoring in the fog and oranges raining down. Still one of my favorite moments as a fan... sorry for getting off the subject.

Dude, it was the greatest game in Tiger Stadium ever, but it would not have changed anything about Coach McClendon leaving.

Paul Dietzel actually had to ask the board of supervisors to allow Coach McClendon to stay on for the '79 season. It was a done deal - he was already signed up to preside over the Tangerine Bowl committee the next year (or a similar organization).

Charles McClendon died the day before the 2001 SEC Championship Game. Not 2003.

I think this sums up the problem with LSU football at the time, a game we lost is considered the best game ever.

I'll take 97 when we actually beat the #1 team or the 2003 UGA game.

Yes, I know it sounds strange to people who didn't actually attend the game. But if you were there...

Just to give you sort of an alternate persepective - Pat Burrell (Miami player) has said that even though Miami lost the baseball national championship to LSU in '96 - he knows that it was the best and most exciting game ever.

That game was much more important, and he was able to take off his green and orange tinted glasses.
