Just had a flashback for when we signed up for Red Cross help after Katrina. I'm filling out paperwork and racking my brain about how to answer the different probing questions that determine your eligibility.
Woman sits down next to me and announces this subject several times. The aid worker fills out her paperwork and off she goes to the counter where they stamped the debit cards.
I'm so white and compliant.

I hate how our nation panders to the lazy and the rude. I wish we would go back to the system of kicking those kinds of people out of establishments instead of rewarding that kind of behavior.

After Katrina, I spent about three weeks away from home and of course, with a few nights being in a hotel and of course paying for meals and such. When I got home of course everything in the fridge and freezer had to be dumped.
Being the independant sort, I refused to call for FEMA money and had pretty much made up my mind to not ask for anything from anyone.
A co-worker talked me into going to apply for some food stamps, so I made the trip with another guy to go apply. That was a pretty cheesy feeling to go fill out those forms. The guy assisting me at first said I did not qualify, but after I upped the estimate for how much food I lost and added in a few more nights on the road, he got me approved.
Lots of pretty normal looking people using that food stamp card at the stores that first month back in town.
