Who would you have ran? Rachel Alexandra or Mine That Bird?

they knew what they were doing by not running the filly. they didn't want her knocked around... which happens in a 20 horse field. look at how many horses came out of the race cut up. i would have liked to see her handle the boys, but damn... what a race! even though i was too short to see all but 100 yards at the top of the stretch.

I don't think you can really compare one to the other. Thr track conditions were different and the Oaks ran with a small field. Looking at it now, they got the best of both worlds by winning the two marquee races of the weekend.
The upside to running the filly, if she had won, was that they could breed her and end up with offspring of a Derby winner; with Bird being a gelding, they better invest those winnings well since there won't be a stud fee in his future.

Why would you consider any other horse other than Mine That Bird at this point? This is a dead thread.

The overhead replay of how MTB pushed threw that field was awesome.

The problem with breeding a derby winning filly is that it hasn't worked out in the past. None of the 3 were shite as broodmares. Oaks winners have a bit of a better record. I still think rachael alexandra is the better horse... But I see why they didn't run her. Anyone who has seen her run this year knows she hasn't even been pushed.

A group in Eastern Kentucky owns half of the philly.
The race last year scared the shite out of them to run her in the Derby...so hence, she ran the Oaks and won in a smashing result (over 24 lengths).
I have been told, the owners of her will probably run her in the Preakness ($625 thousand entry fee).
She will demand major bucks with the breeding (I imagine Coolmore will be ll over her).

I'm so excited for the Preakness if that's true!!!!! Mr fantasy is running too. You see him in the withers (or something like that... Excuse me, I'm drunk)? I didn't mean to take anything away from mine that bird in my previous post. I looked at it and it made me feel guilty. He ran a hell of a race. It's just that he's Canadian...

Is the philly a Mary Lou bred horse?
Anyway, that is the conversation out on the Party deck (UK baseball game) of those who went to the Oaks the day before and know the folks from Prestonsburg/Paintsville area...they said the owners wanted to run her in the Derby...but watching the philly break down last year made their decision for the Oaks (wise choice)...but with a smaller field, they like her chances to run with the boys in Baltimore.
entry fees are steep...but, her demand in breeding will pay off!

Wasn't Borail the jockey for both horses? If RA gets the suplimental bid to the Preakness, which horse does he ride?

Just saw she that she has el prado in theree. How is she not grey? Oh well. Hope she makes good babies but you never know. Look at musket man. They sent his sire down to la cause they didn't like what he produced. Guess his stud fee is going up...

Good question...Has he not been the jocky for RA the whole time? But I imagine he rides Bird in the Preakness.
Time to go to Bloodhorse to do some research.

He'll ride the filly. He said she's the best horse he's ever been on

Bloodhorse is my homepage. How sad is that?

Nothing wrong with that. My wife worked wih one of the writers (worked on his new pad in Lexington designing it).
Anyway...sounds like they are gearing for the Breeders instead of Preakness.LINK
Boral has been on er 6 times...won all 6. Something special with that team (jockey and horse)!

I've been known to bet horses just because Calvin is up

I work with someone who did this and won $1000 bucks! Not many people bet the horse... he was horrible on paper, but he won the one that counts!

I wish the Genuine Risk/Secretariat foal would have lived. It would have been interesting to see how that one turned out.
