I'd suggest Michael's Steak and Seafood on the circle at the Galleria Mall. Michael's was previously in downtown B'ham and was the one of the premier spots to eat when the Tide was playing games at Legion Field. It still has a sports theme with a lot of Bama and Auburn memorabilia. Pretty expensive in the evening but the steaks are excellent. In my opinion better steaks than Shula's and much closer than to the Hoover Met than either Ruth Chris or Fleming's. Michael's does have a nice selection of lunch time specials (meat and veggies) for under $10. Good place to celebrate a Tiger victory. If you go ask for Jeff as your server. He is my son and a huge Tiger fan! You may remember him as the "excited" fan at the end of the South Carolina game in the SEC tournament last year.

My son and wife love steaks so we might have to try them for lunch. My son is 6'2" and 250 lbs and eats way too much to take him to dinner there. Plus we have 2 of his friends coming and they eat just as much. I'd drop $250 to $300 before I got out of there for dinner.

Grew up in New Orleans and miss the food. We have found some good places in Hoover though. Tortugas in the strip mall across from Wal-Mart on Hwy 150 in Hoover has great stuffed pizza. Harry's Place on Hwy 31 (South of I-459)in Hoover has very good burgers. If you want good Italian, Salvatore's on Hwy 31 (North of I-459) in Hoover is excellent. Not much for ambiance, but the owner is from New York and knows good food.
J.Alexanders on the Galleria Mall Ring Road is good. Similar to Houston's. And as previously mentioned, New Orlands Food and Spirits on Hwy 31 in Vestavia is owned by the same family with restaurants of the same name in the New Orleans area and is very good too.

Do you know if this is the same as the New Orleans Food & Spirits on LaPalco Blvd in Harvey? If this is the same owner and he is able to replicate the quality, this is great news! I will be making the drive down from Chattanooga to B'Ham just to eat there!
Not sure what he owns back home. Been up here to long to remember the good ole days. We found it one day driving around and I love it. Never had a problem with service. We ate a late lunch and were in and out even with two kids. I personally prefer it over Cajun Steamer.

As others have said and I forgot all about, New Orleans Food ans Spirits is very good. I also second Courtyard 280. Great place if you like to shut the bars down.

A little insight on Birmingham before you make your plans. Birmingham is a great city but there are numerous places that are very dangerous. Basically the suburbs are the best areas; Mountain Brook, Vestavia, Hoover, Cahaba Heights and Pelham. These cities are located off two major Hwy 31 and 280. HWY 280 has the tendency to have horrible traffic.
Within 5 miles of Regions Park and safe:
Courtyard on HWY 31
Hampton Inn on HWY 150
Hyatt Place on 150
Renaissance Ross Bridge - Expensive and on a nice golf course
Days Inn on 150. - does not look to be in the best shape
La Quinta on Riverchase Parkway - quiet and very slow on weekend because it is a hotel that serves businesses on Riverchase Parkway.
Whitney Hotel - You pay for the location (attached to the Galleria). Not really that great for the price but will give the wife something to do if she would rather shop than attend the games.
Hwy 280 has hotels and restaurants and is a great area but the aforementioned traffic is a huge problem. These hotels are about 10 miles from Regions Park.
Downtown has the Redmont Hotel which is a nice hotel with a good bar but is a a good distance away from Regions Park and not a good area at night.
Sheraton Downtown is nice and recently renovated but is not in the best area of town.
Restaurants - there are a ton of restaurants but NOTHING that you are used to in LA. Basically, I would suggest going to the BBQ restaurants for the week. It is like telling visitors in LA to go to the Macaroni Grill and not ACME oyster. I would not suggest any seafood place as they are not comparable to what you are used too.

My son informed me Jubilee Joe's was one of the places we ate at last year and he definitely wants to eat there again this year. Food was good and owner was very nice. If I remember correctly he was from somewhere in LA but I don't recall exactly where.

Better idea, don't come. It smells afterwards.

Jim N Nicks is a great place to eat.

BaysideBama - I have 6 potential Bama fans coming with us as well so I think that gets me a free pass into Bama. We love LSU and they love Bama and we get along great. Go figure.
It's all about great games, great friends, and a good time.

Some decent recommendations for restaurants for anyone going to Hoover next week.

Leonardos 2520 Rocky Ridge Road in Hoover is also good.

Haven't had any good boudin in a while - not much in Kansas!
You don't have to tell me. I've lived in Kansas for 5 years now, and the food sucks, with the exception of some of the BBQ places. Other than some pretty good BBQ, there is nothing but chains, run of the mill Mexican, and Chinese. Don't even think about seafood. I guess I should have anticipated that, given that I'm about as far from the coast as you can get in the US. The corn and beef is good though.

I just went by there and asked about their live crawfish, if pre-ordered, prices are 2.50/lb
They were very nice and are looking forward to the LSU crowd next week.

I am from Baton Rouge and have lived in Birmingham for over 2 years now. Here are my suggestions...
Seafood: Cajun Steamer- close, and great food. All of the chefs are from New Orleans (at least that is what the owner told me). If your going with your wife and kids though, I forewarn you that the waiters are all gorgeous women and wear revealing clothing. So, if that bothers your family, I'd avoid it.
BBQ: Mo's on 150 is fantastic. If you are coming from the stadium, go towards I-459 and it is on your right. However, the best BBQ by far is a place about ten-13 minutes further called Bob Syke's. It is the best BBQ in the B'ham area by far. It's cheap, and family environment. I'd highly recommend it to you. Full Moon is okay, but it would be much more worth your time to go to Bob Syke's for much better quality and even a better price. There is always Jim N Nick's, but I think it's a little pricy. The closest one to the stadium is on Hwy. 31.
Mexican: Cocina Superior at the Brookwood Mall is excellent. Great environment, but a little pricey as well. There is also a place on Lorna Road that is great, but I can't remember the name of it (something Lizzard). Superior Grill on 280 is great for lunch, but that is a good hike from Hoover.
Italian: Johnny Korino's at Patten Creek is good. Also, Leonardo's in Vestavia is the best in B'ham by far. It is nice, but if you are looking for that it is wonderful.
If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to email me- cbhughes@samford.edu
I am really good at this kind of stuff. I would definitely say you need to go to Bob Syke's though if your in town- I'd be willing to take your family there if you want me to- I love it that much.
