all that i know is that it has nothing to do with LSU

LSU system ? figured it would fit in with all the talk of universities around here cutting back funding and such. Thank god we have TAF
Posted on 5/1/09 at 12:57 pm to igotworms
why are students that are passing through allowed to vote on something as longstanding as athletics?

meh.......I attended LSU and graduated from UNO. Athletics at UNO are a non-issue to me. I do like their baseball team but really do not follow it very often.

right, but 53% students as of may 09 say no. What if that changes next year or the year after? this should be some sort of board vote is what i'm saying.

and this impacts LSU because we play them every year in baseball (twice this year)
Posted on 5/1/09 at 1:02 pm to Coon
wait only 53% of the students want to keep athletics??

your joking right?

No 53% at UNO said dont, and 47% said kepp. And the total number of votes was less than 3000

"53 percent of the students voted no on the proposal to save the sports teams amid big budget cuts. " per the article.

no, only 47% want to. they were going to charge about $8 per credit hour

my question is the article says that they can't support DI athletics without the funds, does that mean they would drop down or end sports all together?
Posted on 5/1/09 at 1:13 pm to mlttiger
well, if they don't have an athletics program anymore, we can't play them

there are a bunch of other in state schools we could play (southeastern etc...)so i guess the impact on LSU is not all that big

What would dropping down do? That wouldn't save any money, would it? They don't have a football program, which at most schools is the only financially "black" sport. All others are in the red. I would assume that at LSU, football supports many of the other sports that LSU is involved in.
I don't think that most LSU fans understand the situation that many small schools around the country face. If they don't have a football program or have state monies pouring into it then most can't survive financially.
I would like to see how much money UNO is losing by running an athletic department. Most people just assume that schools make money by having athletics, but that just isn't the case at some smaller D1 schools.
