Subject came up in a thread over at SecTalk.com about Florida's band;
LSU band
A former Gamecock band member said he thought LSU's band was the only band in the SEC to give full scholarships.
Can anyone confirm this? Curious as to how many of LSU's band are on full or partial scholarships.

I think they give out some full rides to music students not for them to play in the band..

Every band member gets a $1k scholarship. Band managers get paid a little more.
I don't know if other SEC bands do this.

I got a full scholarship via the GBFTL. I believe they have so many "academic" scholorships to give out to participating members if they meet GPA/ACT scores. I wasn't even in the music college, I was in engineering.

Plus we got $640 during the fall. That was between '93-'97.

One of the posters on this thread went to JUCO until he could get a spot in the LSU band. Another poster's daughter went to West Virginia because she couldn't get a spot.

Yea, I heard most schools really respect our band..
I have always thought they were great but I figured everybody thought that about their band..

I'm on a full ride for band, only have to pay room and board. But I play sax so that makes it ten times more difficult to make Tiger Band, so I didn't make it last semester. Since we didn't have great season less people will try and more spots will open for 1st years. You can be out of state and a non-music major and still get a marching band scholarship.

By spot do you mean scholarship?

No actually in the band. They only take 325 and of that a good 80% is brass.

Sax is not considered brass??

I've heard from some saxes that it's an absolute bitch to get in as a woodwind.
I'm going to be trying out later this semester as a trumpet. Evidently they like us.

Depends what you play. You have a much better chance making it playing brass (trumpet, trombone, etc.) than playing woodwind. Assuming you were pretty good in High School.
FWIW, I think we're one of the only bands in the SEC that doesn't allow everyone who tries out in.
Making pregame as a freshman regardless of what you play can be pretty hard.

My freshman year, they only cut 1 or 2. Last year though we had more than usual try out and we cut 3-4 I think. (this out of about 70)

I started band in '93 and only 2 got cut, but the band was only 270...plus the team sucked those years. There were tons of woodwinds then because they just needed people. I am sure that has changed as the enrollment has gone up and the team is good.

If you are an out of state student that is not a music major, and you meet the GPA and SAT requirements, they will give you a full ride. $46,000 and waive your out of state Tuition. It is the "Golden Oaks" scholarship. However you can not be a music major or be from in state if you want to receive this particular scholarship.
Also, every member of the band gets paid $1000 per semester via a check for $200 every month.
