Once men figured out the airplane could be put to use in war, it didn’t take long for them to figure out they could, and should really, personalize their mounts with artwork….

Nose art really came into its own during WWII. Pilots, both Allied and Axis, once again put their own touch onto their aircraft…

German

British

And, of course, our American forefathers…

But it was the B-24 Liberator crew who, thanks to the substantial canvas they had to work with, who took nose art to another level…

I could post countless more. What are some of your favorites?

As a kid I went to several Confederate Air Force air shows. The nose art was one of my favorite things to look at. Thanks for bringing back memories which I had forgotten. One of my favorites was a P-38 named 'Scatterbrain Kid'. I believe it crashed in the mid 1970s.

Sadly that continued to happen after the war when bombers were retired and put on public displays in museums. There are multiple instances of nude pinup style nose art being modified to put lingerie or other coverings on the girls.

This one?

Ivd never seen a P-38 done in this camouflage pattern. I’ve got two P-38s in my model stash. I may have to do one like this.
