It's part of this general trend where they make popular series drag on forever, even after the show has come to a natural conclusion.

They were originally going to only make Shrinking 3 seasons long. And Season 3 brings the show to a natural conclusion. Paul, Alice, and the gay guys are all leaving Jimmy behind, and even Sean is leaving the backyard, granted only to move next door. Also, Matthew, who granted was only a character for one season, is moving as well.

Yet they're renewing it for a Season 4? This next season seems totally forced.

I mean, unless the season finale ties things up, there’s a lot unresolved.

Season 4 is already in the works, but this was discussed in the season long thread. Parts of this season seem forced and a logical explanation would be the added fourth season. As OP stated, the plan from Lawrence, Goldstein and Segal was a 3 season arc with each season representing a different theme - Grief, Forgiveness, Moving On. With the additional season, they had to add additional conflict and it has made the show more awkward than its original flow.

My wife loves this show, I watch it with her and I hate it. All the characters are assholes.

It’s amazing how many shows Bill Lawrence can put out at the same time.

A few years ago it was Ted Lasso, Bad Monkey and Shrinking. Right now it’s Shrinking, Scrubs (2026) and Rooster.

He and Mike Schur are two of my GOATS.
