Going to Iceland in September

Going for duck and goose hunting. And also to explore.
I assume that Reykjavík is to Iceland like Anchorage is to Alaska: Fly in and get out of the city and into the countryside as soon as possible. Accurate?
Any tips? Will be driving across the country to hunt in the north.

Here are some recent threads on Iceland trips. You'll have a great time. Reykjavik is a really cool city and worth spending some time there, but yea not worth spending any significant portion of the trip just there.

We did a guided tour when we went, so hopped around all over the island. One place we stayed that we absolutely loved was the Wilderness Center. Converted horse farm that now runs a family owned B&B. It is tucked away in very remote fjord valley on the eastern part of the island. Always like to give them a shout out as they really did a great job. The dinner and breakfast they did for us was delicious and they are just good people.

Yes, recent threads have good info.
My biggest piece of advice is waterproof everything. Pants, shoes, socks, a heavier outer jacket and a lighter jacket. It's a good idea to buy those items in the US especially once the weather gets warmer as they will most likely be cheaper this time of year and DEFINITELY cheaper than they are in Iceland.

Can you talk about the logistics of doing this?
We went to Iceland in October of 23. I remember seeing ducks everywhere and wondered if they were all domestic or if they migrated.

Sure. I found a contact with a guide in Iceland and will be hunting with him for (3) days in the north of the country. I haven’t talked specifics yet if it will be field or water hunting. It looks like they have many of the same species as here with the addition of eurasion widgeons and tufted ducks. Should be all wild birds.

Updated info (for anyone interested):
I will be hunting in the area around Akureyri for (3) days. The plan is for (1) day of field hunting for geese and (2) days pothole hunting for ducks.
Bringing a gun from the States is difficult, so I will be renting my gun there (probably a Benelli M2, but I might also use some type of O/U).
Taxidermy services are available. If I shoot a nice eurasian widgeon I will likely have it mounted and shipped back to me.

I liked Akureyri way more than Reykjavic. Do they require steel shot? I know they imported some caribou and there’s limited hunting for them. Any activity in the Icelandic backcountry is a plus.

That is good to hear about the location. I’m not sure if steel shot is required. When I hunted ducks in South America and Africa I was using lead. And no plugs. And electronic calls in Africa.
