Sky News host James Macpherson questions the appointment of Iran as a co-chair of the United Nations’ Commission for Social Development.

“The craziness continues not just in Victoria … or the United Nations, that’s your other option, where Iran have just been mad co-chairs of the Committee for Social Development,” Mr Macpherson said.

“Could you imagine a worse nation to co-chair a committee responsible for the promotion of democracy around the world than Iran?”

UN Rewards Iran With Vice Chair Seat as Regime Crushes Peaceful Protesters

Iran has been elected as one of two vice chairs of the United Nations Commission for Social Development at the opening of the Commission’s 65th session.

Representing Iran, Abbas Tajik was chosen to serve along with Azerbaijan’s Shahriyar Hajiyev as vice chair; Stefano Guerra of Portugal was elected chair. Elections for the remaining Bureau members were postponed.

The announcement was buried in the small, second-to-last paragraph of a very lengthy announcement Wednesday (Feb. 10) on the UNCSD website.

The 46-member body held its current session from 2 to 10 February, bringing together ministers and civil society, United Nations officials and delegates, in a series of conversations about eradicating poverty and building inclusive societies. A subsidiary body of the Economic and Social Council, the Commission annually recommends texts for adoption by that entity.

Among the texts that the 64th session of the Commission approved was a draft resolution on “Advancing social development and social justice through coordinated, equitable and inclusive policies”. The document would have the Economic and Social Council reaffirm commitment to implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development for all.

The resolution would call upon member states to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, including by removing barriers that prevent women from accessing, remaining and progressing in the labor market, such as gender stereotypes, and all forms of violence, including gender-based violence.

It did not specify allowing women and girls the option of wearing or not wearing a hijab, nor did it refer to harassment, arrests, beatings and murders of peaceful protesters.

While approved without a vote, several speakers from European and South American nations spoke afterwards to express reservations and disappointments about the draft resolution.

The discussions, which immediately preceded the election of the 65th Session leadership, highlighted the “importance of social protection systems, decent work and inclusive labor markets, as well as the need to address social development across the life course.”

Massacres of thousands of peaceful protesters apparently don’t rate as a violation of “social protection systems.”

There are few things the UN loves more than appointing countries with the opposite traits to its various committees and commissions. Look at the composition of its human rights or climate change groups.

UN bloat. They need to be stripped down to their origin functions when they were first formed in the late 40s.
