Is the fireplace brick considered an "Old" St. Louis or "Old" Chicago style brick? How would I find out the color?

I like picture 2 (below) better -- as far as the brick color -- but is it the same and just a different angle (obviously a different picture)?

Don’t know , but those seem to match pretty damn well.

I’ve been curious how long brick colors and patterns exist before they move on and quit producing them.

I have a half and half brick wall with iron gating around the property. We bought next door property and I’d like to eventually wall it off too, but I’m uncertain if I’ll be able to best match the bricks with the existing ones.

ChatGPT says it’s old Chicago. Do with that as you please.

Thank you for this information. I didn't realize ChatGPT could pick up that up and determine colors.

yes that’s old Chicago which is a pattern more than a color and very common. My fireplace and chimney are that pattern and I like it a lot. It goes with everything as they say

Thanks for the addiitional information as well. Would you mind posting a picture of your fireplace?

How does one obtain a particular pattern of brick so to speak? Is it showing the brick person pictures of what I am looking for and finding the right pattern for my use?

if you order a cube (for example) of old Chicago pattern you’ll get a mix of red/white/etc that the mason will pick thru and lay up in a random pattern. So it’s actually more important to review pattern with your installer than it is to specify any particular color at the brickyard. Just tell them what you want and they’ll know what to pack for you.

If in BR talk to ACME and cocreham

I’m out of town for a few weeks I’ll take a pic of the fireplace when I get home. Mine are actually “mexic” brick

That doesn’t look like any old Chicago I’ve ever saw… it’s usually much more white/ blonde…

Of course, “old” brick is funny… t they just name it from the city they got it from. So you could get two batches that are too totally different colors. If the buildings they took them off of had different bricks in the first place. If that makes sense.

The second book actually looks like “tumbled” brick. And not actually “old” brick.

Tumbled brick is a new brick that’s made to have the old look

right…it’s more of a pattern than a color collection as the actual pigment will vary greatly from supplier to supplier and from batch to batch. And you dont want actual “old” reclaimed brick unless you are doing a restoration or need to match existing. Too many issues especially for the mason. I have a pile of old mexic and st Joe brick leftover from when my house was built in the 70s but I only use that for landscaping…when I did new brick in my kitchen (same pattern) I got a new cube

Newly fired brick is the way to go, various colors laid randomly

Take a look at Cherokee Brick. They offer a nice selection of tumbled ‘old’ bricks.
