"The Cure won Best Alternative Music Album for “Songs of a Lost World” and Best Alternative Music Performance for “Alone"

Although not geared toward mainstream listening, Songs of a Lost World is a Cure fan's treat, similar to Disintegration in that regard. I saw them here in New Orleans on their first show of the tour, and then I flew up to Baltimore to see them again.

(Side note: how was this story missed by STigers? ;) )

In their defense, that Grammy category wasn't coined yet, but yes, Disintegration would have killed.

I was curious as to what alternative meant. According to the Grammy:

quote:

Music Facts: Alternative
Alternative rock was born from the indie underground in the 1970s and reached mainstream popularity in the 1990s.
Today, alternative has evolved beyond its guitar-driven roots to a sound that encompasses many genres, such as pop, rock, rap, and Latin.
Recent alternative GRAMMY winners include Fiona Apple, Vampire Weekend and Beck.

So basically whatever we say it means. I don't begrudge The Cure from getting a lifetime achievement award, but I think the following better represent what i would call alternitive:

Car Seat Headrest, Ty Segall, S.G. Goodman, Folk Bitch Trio.
