On Thursday, the Donroe Doctrine was again exercised in typical fashion, as the White House announced another tranche of actions against communist Cuba. Cuba has lost a major source of oil now that Nicolás Maduro is looking at American jail bars from the wrong side, and now President Trump is turning the screws a little tighter on Cuba.

quote:

Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order declaring a national emergency and establishing a process to impose tariffs on goods from countries that sell or otherwise provide oil to Cuba, protecting U.S. national security and foreign policy from the Cuban regime’s malign actions and policies.

The Order imposes a new tariff system that allows the United States to impose additional tariffs on imports from any country that directly or indirectly provides oil to Cuba.

The Order authorizes the Secretary of State and Secretary of Commerce to take all necessary actions, including issuing rules and guidance, to implement the tariff system and related measures.

The President may modify the Order if Cuba or affected countries take significant steps to address the threat or align with U.S. national security and foreign policy objectives.

I dont think people realize just how close they are to collapsing.

Venezuela not only sent them oil very very cheap, they sent them excess that they turned around and sold for a hefty profit on the open market. Cuba also sent 1000s of doctors and military to Venezeula for revenue. All of that is gone now.

Cuba has little source of revenue. Their cigar business was sold off years ago as well as Havana Club their signature rum. AB Imbev owns their beer business, Pepsi comes from Guatemala and Coke from Mexico. They were already experiencing rolling blackouts, now more often and unscheduled. And back up generators arent a lot of good if you dont have fuel for them. Which affects cold storage, and, well if you are a tourist ya better stick to powdered milk and chinese peanut butter or risk food poisioning....or visit another island.

And yes the people of Cuba want it. Viva cuba indeed.

Nickel and cobalt mines say otherwise. US AMAX built a huge nickel ore plant south of New Orleans in 1959 to process their ores from Cuba. It was demolished 20 years ago. It sat there for years before Shell's Criterion catalyst subsidiary converted part of it for making catalysts.

Canadian owned Falconbridge made bank for decades in Cuba after Castro came to power.

Sexiest woman I ever met where even here slightest movement meant frick me now was Cuban. She was a "journalist" in Houston who arrived via Venezuela 25 or so years ago and was dating my wife's uncle when I met her at dinner. She was so much pro Castro though. The Uncle in law DGAF, he was getting whatever he wanted every night, as much as he wanted.

The wheels have already fallen off in Cuba so it won't take much for it to collapse.

Cuba was one of the richest countries in Latin America before Castro. Now it is one of the poorest.

My wife's friend and her husband along with a small group of wealthy friends take trips to various luxury resorts a few times a year. Last year they went to Cuba. The hotel didn't have air conditioning or hot water. The power was off much of the time and they all got food poisoning likely due to lack of consistent refrigeration.
