Thinking of taking a day trip tour here next month from Cancun. 12 hr day. Cenote Azul, Lagoon pontoon boat, breakfast and lunch. Pickup from resort. Or should I rent a car and stay one night in Bacalar? Really wish day tour did the los rapidos.

Bacalar is amazing... hidden gem for now.
Most full-day tours from Cancun include hotel pickup & drop-off, so you don’t have to worry about driving or navigation. Tours last about 11–13 hours...an early start (~5–6 am) and return late evening (~9–10 pm).
Driving from Cancun to Bacalar is about 4–5 hours (one way) along Highway 307. It’s generally considered safe in daylight if you take standard precautions (don’t speed, avoid night driving).

quote:depends on how easy it is to rent the car. We rented right at our resort and it was completely painless and the vehicle was safe and in good condition. The main highway is easy and very well marked just slow down at the humps and do not exceed the speed limit. take it easy and enjoy the ride; you’ll probably get stopped at a checkpoint or two just be cool, have your passport and hotel room key and don’t be burning a joint or anything. Drive safely but confidently, and gas up often

Would you recommend taking kids for a 4 day trip?

you could do it but theres no way i personally would drive all the way from cancun to bacalar just for the day. at least spend one night but the reality is thats pretty much two days of driving. not worth it. if you were staying in tulum certainly. matter of fact, tulum is a great day trip from cancun...easy drive, plenty to do there. go on a cenotoes tours, take the kids to the ruins and then to a beachside place for lunch and a swim, then walk the beach road for bit. get on out of there (beach road) before dark it gets pretty crazy...fun for adults but kids not so much

4days 3 nights. Planning to go now next January instead of skiing. Would do pontoon boat one day. Los rapidos another and cenote, ruins, fort and relax another. Couple days at Cancun resort.

go for it then it will be a blast.
see if your resort has a rental car place (or choose one that does), take a transfer from the airport to the resort, grab the car and head south. when you return, drop the car and enjoy the resort.

If you are going to go that far consider spending a couple of days in Xcalak.
