We decided to change up our spring break beach destination this year and instead of going to Charleston we are spending the week on the beach at Jekyll Island.

From the time I was born until about the age of 10, Jekyll was our annual family summer beach destination, but that ended in the mid to late 80s, and aside from a couple of trips in the mid 90s, I haven't been back.

I know I want to check out Southern Soul BBQ, and I think my 4 year old might like the sea turtle center. Thinking maybe walk around Fort Frederica and Christ Church area.

Any can't miss suggestions, especially with regard to food? When I was a kid we always made it a point to eat at Emmeline and Hessie’s, but I am pretty sure it's closed. I also remember The Crab Trap with the hole in the center of the tables, but my memory of it is that it was kinda dark and run down.

Southern Soul BBQ is good, was on Triple D, if you are inclined to go off Island into Brunswick Hootenanny's at the Yard is also good BBQ.
Fort Frederica and Christ Church is a nice area especially if you enjoy history, if craft beer is your thing Barrier Island Brewing is a nice spot for cold beer and good food, a stroll down Mallery St. at the pier and Neptune park is relaxing for people watching and a nice play area for kids.

My favorites:

Georgia Sea Grill

This is fine dining. Chef spends his mornings at produce and seafood markets. Piano bar. Not for children.

Next door is a pizza place to take children. CJ's Italian

Crowded if you get there after 7. Good marinara and bread while you wait.

Across the street is a no-frills restaurant that serves better than average food. Grandkids like the strawberry crepes for breakfast. yelp website.
Mallory street cafe

Crab trap is the moat popular seafood and it gets crowded. Haven't tried it yet, a new seafood restaurant opened behind the Crab Trap.

Fiddlers Trip advisor web site.

I really miss Alfonzo's.

If you are staying in a condo and want to cook, the best seafood market is in Brunswick.

City market.

Best grocery store is Harris Teeters. You can use a Kroger card there.

Dulce Dough Bakery - great breakfast spot. Palmers Village cafe is excellent for brunch or breakfast- usually a wait there. As mentioned the Brewery had good food and different than typical brewery offerings.
The best bar on the island is in the lobby of a hotel on SSI. Village Inn and Pub- mostly locals there. Also the King and Prince hotel has a great lobby bar and dining with beautiful views.
