Toughest course in the Houston area

We were having this discussion after golf Tuesday.
From the Tips -
We thought it might be Champions CG over all today.
I said if the wind was blowing hard, it would have to be Magnolia Creek .
I remember back in the day the Ninfa Mini Tour played Willow Creek GC and it ate their lunch. I'm not sure of the conditions of it now.
And in it's day Waterwood National was a beast in Huntsville where Freddie Couples got his tour card.
Thoughts ?

Only Houston course I’ve played was Tour 18, and their “Amen Corner” was Humble’ing… lol

Nicklas at Carlton from the tips is quite a bitch

Heavily forested and brutally long, especially in the age of balata. It was Champions Cypress without the maintenance and smaller greens.

Waterwood is the hardest course I’ve ever played, wish it was still around! I’ll say that The Covey at Big Easy Ranch is a pretty good challenge as well.

I think Jackrabbit is more difficult than cypress at champions. However, at cypress they can do some brutal stuff on the greens.
TPC Woodlands and GCoH Tournament courses can both be brutal from the back.
For me though Deerfield in Kingwood consistently pisses me off and I play like trash. Doesn’t matter the tee box.

One time there was no one the course because of the cold temps and the wind was blowing a sustained 20mph gusting to over 35mph.. so we decided to play the tips on Mag Creek Scotland- Ireland, it was so brutal no one broke 100.

I'm thinking Kingwood Island cause it's dumber than a liberal.
Champions isn't hard, just long.
Woodlands Player is hard.
Wilderness plays tough.

Wilderness is tough because by the time you get to the back nine you are weak from losing a pint of blood from the mosquitoes.

Don't know what the rating/slope is but I think Quail Valley El Dorado is tough from the back tees.

I miss Waterwood! Pretty cool layout, and a tough Par 3 on the lake. We did a golf trip, with 20 plus guys, back in the day there. Perfect set up, park your car and didn’t have to leave the resort for several days. They threw an extra condo in, for our group, as a hangout spot to eat, drink, and tally up scores/games. The burgers, at the clubhouse, were excellent too. At one point there was talk of an investor, from the Dallas area, buying it and re-opening it up….never happened though.

Front nine is actually pretty easy. Yep the back nine has kinda an absurd layout and obviously 18 is a challenge if you can't drive over the water. With that said, I rarely play it unless I get sucked into it for a tournament. I pretty much stick to the Forest or Lakes when I play on the reservation.

#17 and 18 for sure.

Fair point, front on Island is easy. The Marsh was my favorite course of the regular club. Deerwood is light years ahead of the others.

#18 on the island doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
Just like a par 5 at Falcon Point where you go iron then iron and iron.

I'm slipping, can't believe I didn't think of my old club, Walden.

Yep Deerwood is light years ahead of all the courses on the reservation but it is also light years ahead in that monthly bill as well. Luckily I get to play it a bunch with a vendor who also lives in Kingwood. I don’t think Deerwood is Mag Creek level hard but it does have some quirks that can bite you if you don’t know the course at all. What I like about it is they keep it in great shape despite the hurricane damages and they just redid the greens. It also isn’t a boring course and has some pretty scenic holes plus it has the Tin Cup hole.

Mag Creek doesn't do much for me, it's tough but even in the wind it's nothing crazy. Heck I think Galveston CC is tougher
