Rock-Orchestra hybrids. Leading off: Procol Harem, Denmark, Live in 2006 ('Conquistador')

The likes of what we'll never see again. The late 60s and early 70s gave us musical innovation and creativity, and musicianship unrivaled by any other era (imho). Thankfully, its legacy has been carried forth over the decades.
Released twice within 5 years, initially in 1967 (along with 'Whiter Shade of Pale'), the original 'Conquistador' lacked any orchestration punch until it's stunning 1972 version release recorded with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra the previous year. This version featured its dramatic trademark brass intro. Strangely, both versions topped the charts at #16.
This spirited concert rendition by vocalist/pianist Gary Brooker and his band Procol Harem (not original guys) is live, backed up by The Danish Orchestra (Denmark's version of the BBC orchestra).
The concert took place at historical Ledreborg Castle (built 1740) on August 19-20, 2006. What a regal and spectacular setting and venue!
And how about these lyrics written by 21-year old Keith Reid? (he also wrote 'Whiter Shade of Pale'.)
CONQUISTADOR
Conquistador your stallion stands in need of company
And like some angel's haloed brow
You reek of purity
I see your armor plated breast
Has long since lost its sheen
And in your death masked face
There are no signs which can be seen
And though I hoped for something to find
I could see no maze to unwind
Conquistador a vulture sits, upon your silver sheath
And in your rusty scabbard now, the sand has taken seed
And though your jewel-encrusted blade
Has not been plundered still
The sea has washed across your face
And taken of its fill
And though I hoped for something to find
I could see no maze to unwind
And though I hoped for something to find
I could see no maze to unwind
Conquistador there is no time, I must pay my respect
And though I came to jeer at you
I leave now with regret
And as the gloom begins to fall
I see there is no, only all
And though you came with sword held high
You did not conquer, only die
And though I hoped for something to find
I could see no maze to unwind
And though I hoped for something to find
I could see no maze to unwind
And though I hoped for something to find
I could see no maze to unwind

'Whiter Shade of Pale' with amazing chorus.
Same place, same time.
Majestic. And Very moving.

I discovered those performances many years ago, as Whiter Shade is one of my all-time favorite songs.
Here is Ian Anderson's orchestral Aqualung, from a concert with orchestra.
