NIL is Changing.

Theses commentators are such fools and very lazy. I keep hearing that “Lane doesn’t need to leave because can win a championship at Ole Miss now because of NIL.” Not a chance.
They clearly have not done their homework to realize the NIL is changing with the new clearing house rules and collective agreements. It will go back to the blue bloods winning as usual. Those who have the best facilities, deeper recruiting pool, more resources, bigger stadiums, etc. will continue to move forward while Indiana, Ole Miss, Vandy, etc. will go back to their bottom of the league to mid team status.
All that to say this. Lane understands this, hence why even with a chance for his team to make the playoff and compete, he understands that the long term best decision is to leave for those fighting Tigahs, especially while his coaching stock is as high as it it is

That doesn't bode well for LSU.

You’re assuming the clearinghouse is the new norm when it’s really just a temporary patch. It isn’t backed by a fed statute and it wasn’t negotiated through collective bargaining, which means it still walks and talks like a wage control scheme. That makes it a sitting duck in federal court. All it takes is one lawsuit and the whole thing will be gutted.
So the idea that this structure will shape the future is wishful thinking. It’s running on borrowed time and borrowed authority. Smart people are reading the fine print. The courts will too.

Recent NIL policy changes include the NCAA's new disclosure and transparency rules, which took effect in August 2024 and require athletes to disclose NIL deals over $600. Additionally, a major court settlement is anticipated to finalize in spring 2025, which is expected to lead to a salary cap system and further rule adjustments for Division I athletes, though schools cannot directly pay athletes for NIL or performance under current rules.
Key NIL policy changes:
Disclosure and transparency: Starting August 1, 2024, Division I athletes must disclose NIL agreements over $600 to their school within 30 days of signing. Third-party NIL service providers can also voluntarily register with the NCAA.
School payments: Despite the changes, schools are still prohibited from paying athletes for NIL activities, though the upcoming settlement may lead to a pool of revenue-based compensation for student-athletes.
Athlete compensation: Athletes can still profit from endorsements and other commercial activities. However, NIL compensation cannot be contingent on enrollment or tied to athletic performance.
Recruiting limitations: NIL deals cannot be used for recruiting purposes, and third-party NIL entities are prohibited from communicating with prospective student-athletes until they sign a letter of intent or enroll.
Future changes (2025): The May 2024 settlement is expected to introduce a salary cap system for Division I institutions, with institutions allocating a portion of revenue into a pool for student-athlete payments.
State laws: Athletes must still comply with their state's specific NIL laws, which may include restrictions on endorsing certain products or services.
High school NIL: Some states are starting to vote on allowing NIL deals for high school athletes.
