Hey guys,
I don't see them mentioned too often (outside of Baldur's Gate 3) but was curious if anyone else enjoys playing western (non-Japanese) RPGs...

I've been dabbling a little bit lately in Pillars of Eternity and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and was wondering if anyone has any experiences with these or similar games (or has any they want to recommend!)?

I really enjoy the blend of story, character advancement, and combat strategy that these games bring, although they are a huge commitment usually due to their length.

Western CRPGs are my jam. Pillars is a great one and the sequel is also well-done. If you like that same style of storytelling but want to be the bad guy, I’d recommend checking out Tyranny.

If you dig BG3, Larian’s Divinity: Original Sin is also great. Especially the second one where you can really see the bones of what would become BG3, but with a greater focus on environmental combat.

If you want a change of pace from fantasy settings, Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader is highly underrated. If you’re even remotely interested in the 40k-verse, it’s definitely worth it.

Awesome, thank you for the recommendations! I've started Pillars and WoTR like ten times apiece trying different character classes and trying to decide which one to focus on first!

I actually own both Divinity games and just bought Rogue Trader on sale, and I just checked and I own Tyranny also haha.

So if you had to pick from one of those - which would you start on? I need to focus on one or I won't beat any of them! :)

If you’ve bounced off of Pillars multiple times, I’d probably try to take you in another direction first: maybe check out Rogue Trader or D:OS2 first. Might be enough of a breath a fresh air to get you going. You don’t need to play the first Divinity to start 2, and the first one is starting to show its age a bit anyways.

Also, completely forgot to mention Disco Elysium. It’s a much more cerebral game with a bigger focus on dialogue/choices than actual combat. The writing is absolutely superb, though. Some of the best I’ve encountered in a game before, so if you want something that is a real departure from what you’ve been playing, I’d start there!

In terms of my personal enjoyment, I’d rank them:
Disco Elysium
Rogue Trader
D:OS 2 (bumped down ever since BG3 came along and took it to another level, but not a knock on this game at all)

Hope that helps!

Huge help, thank you very much!! I'm kind of more a collector of games these days who just picks up games on sale but has limited gaming time so trying to optimize my time here.

I actually own Disco Elysium too and will start there!

Also just to clarify, it's not so much that I bounced off it as I experienced a problem I commonly have with these games... which is that I start the game and get a few hours into it then start thinking "man I bet it'd be fun to play one of those" and restart.

I actually love the game and fully intend on beating it someday! Just have to prioritize due to limited time.

No worries! Hope you enjoy!

I feel you there. Steam has become more of a gaming archive for me than anything nowadays. I see a deep discounted game that I know I’m not going to have the time or inclination to play, at least not anytime soon, and I add it to my cart anyways lol

My backlog of titles would reach the moon if stacked on its side

I’m terrified of the possibility that Steam/Valve potentially goes under one day and I lose the years worth of games I’ve compiled, but they keep hooking me in nonetheless.

Probably projecting a bit of my own experience into that statement as it took me at least four or five restarts before I settled on the Cypher and saw it through to the end game.

Haha I was gonna ask you if you'd beaten it and what class you settled on. The Cipher definitely seems intriguing but I'm currently playing with a Chanter and really liking it!

Support classes are so fun to play in these types of games because I can get burned out on being the sword and board frontline type.

Never played chanter because I usually pick up Kana early, but I’m almost always micromanaging him and his songbooks in battle which is cool.

Not sure how deep into the story you got, so I’ll avoid spoilers, but I mostly rolled with Cipher because of lore reasons and how it felt tied to the greater story and the world.

Carrying over your character and party into the sequel also feels great. Lots of continuity there!

Yeah I agree -- I tend to avoid basic types too and why the Chanter is so cool to me. I just got past the point where you get Kana and realized that he's a Chanter too, which triggered another "maybe I'll try a different class..." then it spiraled into a "maybe a different game" and how I wound up here. :)

Haha boy, do I relate. My first playthrough I rolled a wizard only for the first party member I come across to be…a wizard.

If I remember correctly, the only classes that you don’t eventually pick up a party member for are martial classes: barbarian, rogue, monk.

Rocking two ciphers in my party definitely made the mid game easier for me, though. That class is OP once you get some of the mid-tier loot around level 6-7.

I really enjoyed Wrath of the Righteous once I got a few hours in, just took me a bit to really settle on my character's playstyle. That's one I want to go back and play.

You sound a lot like me, someone who collects games and doesn't get much time to play them, but every now and then I'll stick with a game until it's done.

I liked Pillars 1 & 2. 2 had a weaker story but I still enjoyed it.

I like Pathfinder Kingmaker and Wrath. If you hate the Kingdom management, you can easily mod it. I think what most people hated about Kingdom management was that you could have events fail because you were already using all of your characters. Real easy to get around this with mods that can speed up or auto complete your events. Some folks just hate when something fails so mods can fix this. I liked Kingmaker just as much as Wrath. I did a replay of both this year. Some of the completionist folks didn't like the hidden endings in both games because it was real easy to miss the secret endings.

A lot of folks really loved Rogue Trader. I planned to play it when I finished Kingmaker and Wrath but I had some PC issues and never got around to it. Owlcat has proven their ability to make great CRPGs so I am sure Rogue Trader is good but the RPG element was toned down a bit from the insane level of detail and variety in their first two games.

Divinity 2 is fantastic. I really love the score. Gameplay is a bit different. If I remember correctly you need to break down either the opponents physical or magical shield before doing damage. Before BG3, it was my favorite CRPG. I've never played the original Divinity but I assume it is probably worth a play based on the second game.

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 are still worth a play as long as you don't try to compare them to BG3.

Some folks loved Solasta while other hated it. Maybe a bit too cartoony with the characters and I think the rules set made darkness and vision a real issue when hitting the bad guys. I still haven't gotten around to playing it but I did buy it.

Check out Mortismal Gaming. He plays all of the CRPGS and has reviews of everything new and old.
