Road trip from Alaska to Louisiana

Has anybody ever flown to Alaska rented a vehicle and drive home. My wife and I would like to do this in July next year.

Did Fairbanks to Spokane one-way quite a few years ago in a rented truck. Until you get pretty far south in BC conveniences are few. You'll need to make careful arrangements with rental agency...read the fine print. You may find more national agencies in Anchorage.
An alternative would to use a self-drive tour vehicle for the Alcan highway portion of the trip (Fairbanks to Calgary). LINK

I've done it the reverse way (Denham Springs to Anchorage) when I moved up in 2016.
Took a little over two weeks. Drove about 400 or so miles a day (some longer some less) and planned an itinerary. Denham Springs to Dallas/Ft Worth, Dallas to Dumas, Dumas to Denver, Denver to Jackson Hole Wyoming (second longest drive of the trip because took scenic route). Stood the weekend in Jackson Hole, then drove to Boise. From Boise went to Eugene, OR...then to Bellingham, WA. Stayed in Bellingham for two days awaiting the ferry. Took the ferry from Bellingham to Haines. Drove to Haines Junction that afternoon/evening. Stayed at Glacier View Inn (looks sketch asf, but actually nice owner).
From there drove to Tok, stayed at Fast Eddies hotel. Then drove from Tok to Anchorage the next day (longest drive of the trip)
ETA: I stayed at La Quintas most of the way there because they had a good pet policy back then and I was traveling with a cat and dog.

My son drove from Baton Rouge to Ketchikan for his first job quite the hike.

Ive done the reverse. Benton, LA to Juneau (last 80 miles by ferry)
Made a vacation out of it and had a blast.
Northern BC is awesome. Dont miss it.

I have driven from Mississippi to Alaska and from Alaska to Louisiana via the Alaska Marine Highway System (Ferry from Washington to Haines AK). I have enjoyed the trip both times and would definitely do it again. If you are wanting to go to Anchorage you will need a passport because you will drive through Canada at some point.

I've driven from central Georgia to Prudhoe Bay and back. We did it in a VW camper and it's my favorite trip trip ever. Took the summer off to do it. It wasn't just Alaska, we spent time in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Glacier NP, Banff to Jasper, Yellowstone, Colorado, etc.
If you are renting a car I'm not sure I'd drive it all the way back. Maybe spend more time exploring Alaska and less time driving back. Calgary would be a pretty good place to fly back from and it would save several days of relatively boring driving. Unless you just want to be able to say you've driven the length, which is fine.
The Alaska Highway from Fort Nelson to Tok does not have a lot of services. It was easy for us in a camper. You could buy camping gear in Alaska and make your trip easier. Otherwise be sure you have lodging reservations worked out in advance. Food is fairly expensive so get an ice chest and load up on supplies when you can.
However you decide to do it, it's a great trip.
