My #1 criteria for Coach - Hands on with the O or D

I don't want a CEO-type coach who either can't (Orgeron) or won't (Kelly) be intimately involved with one side of the ball or the other.
You can pay less for the OC/DC and are not as reliant on making the right hires when there is the inevitable turnover.
Kiffin, Saban, Kirby, Lanning, etc. all fit this mold.
My sauces say Kiffin btw.

I think you have a higher chance of hitting on a coaching hire if they have high level (sec/big 10) coordinator experience. Smart, Kirby, lanning, elko, Kiffin, Day, Freeman, Huepel

I agree. It seems the coaches that consistently have their teams in the conversation have a coach that can take over one side of the ball regardless of who they hire as coordinator.
All this talk of just needing a CEO gets you O and Kelly. We need a coach that is great at having at least the offense or defense in the top 1/3 of the country year after year.

Brian Hartline and Will stein seem like the up and comers from OSU and Oregon to take a hard look at. Penn state may snag Hartline.
If we go HC, Jeff Brohm / Brent Keys / Clark Lea seem realistic

After watching Les Miles & Sean Payton coach here in south La. for roughly the same period of time, I definitely prefer a playcaller, and not a CEO.
1. Generally, the playcaller got the job mainly bc he is elite at playcalling one side of the ball. Generally, the CEO got the job bc he hired successful playcallers at his last job that may or may not follow the CEO to his new job.
2. When the team is great, the playcaller would only have to replace one coordinator opposite of him. System continuity in theory remains on the playcallers side of the ball. The CEO can theoretically lose both coordinators after every championship season, and the new hires in theory can both be abject failures.

Id really like to get an offensive minding coach and retain some of the defensive staff

The priority should always be the commodity.. either an offensive guy or defensive guy.. I prefer an offensive guy but that’s a personal thought.. doesn’t mean he has to be the coordinator, just that he’s able to control one side at an expert level..
