Who's our punter this year? Did we recruit anyone who can fill this position? Seems I remember we never could back any other team up with our average-poor punting last year. Everyone started with fairly good field position against us. Am I wrong, or do we need a punter?? This seems to be an important position, as you look at the impact on the overall game. Thoughts?? Thank you.

Am I the only person who is a little concerned that Helton averaged only 36 yards per punt in both years at JC?

2007: 69 punts, 35.6 yards/punt
2008: 70 punts, 36.1 yards/punt

This worries me.

Nice retort.

Those numbers were taken straight from his LSU bio.

Unless those numbers are the net punt average and not the average per punt (I'm guessing it is the latter), then, yes, I am concerned.

Sorry if that annoys you.

I don't have a link or any particular reliable source, but it has been stated that his yards per punt average was skewed unfavorably because of the large # of punts that are designed to down the ball within the 20.

Take that FWIW; whether anyone believes that or not doesn't really matter to me because it isn't my information. Furthermore, I doubt the staff would have offered the scholly to a player with no logic behind his stats in a year of loaded talent both in state and out.

Has anyone else heard the same or otherwise?

When he commited there was a link to his story on rivals..to sum it up it said that he impressed us at a kicking competition and that he won longest punt with a 60 yard punt(around that). I don't have the link but it was with rivals I believe. Take it FWIW.

No their field was only 50 yards long. So thats like a 90 yard average. If it was canadian football it be like a mile and a half.

Seriously, they need to have some kind of "punting and kicking contest" here in Baton Rouge each year. High school seniors from around Baton Rouge can come to LSU to compete for a position on the LSU football team. The longest, most-consistently accurate kicks wins.

No kidding, some people who come on and second guess Les and staff like they can't figure out if the guy can punt.

I watched his highlight video on Rivals a while ago because I was curious about the same thing. It seemed like he was punting the ball about 45 yards or more pretty consistently and his accuracy looked very good.

The thing that stuck out to me was that he had a very nice hang time, allowing his coverage to get to the returners who rarely had a chance at any return whatsoever.

He also had some pretty impressive "coffin corner" punts inside the five.

You're right. At least they don't second guess Les on which RB should get the most carries.

To all those saying that we wouldn't waste a scholarship on a crappy kicker/punter, I am pretty sure Les has done it before. LINK

I have heard the words, "better than the pros" associated with his hang time.
