Considering a hunting trip there next year. For whatever reason this trip has been not possible for a number of years (despite trying), making me think it is a sign from above that I shouldn’t go haha.
Anyway, I am reading conflicting reports on the safety for visitors which has me reconsidering.
I have experience traveling in South America and Mexico, so I’m not a novice in that part of the world.
Still, I’m wondering if I should go. Any of y’all been and have info to share?
Thanks!

It's a dictatorship, what are you hunting, Ducks?

No lies told. I got kicked out of Nicaragua in 1992 by their version of the Border Policia. Got a big red X stamp on my passport to prove it. Good Times.

My father did missionary work down there for several years. Like you, he had traveled extensively for missionary work: Nica several times, China, Tanzania, Romania, etc.. He absolutely loved Nicaragua and ended up concentrating his work there for the last few years of his life.
He also ended up drowning in Nicaragua while on a fishing trip on Lake Nicaragua after completing his mission work on a trip. It sounds like you're looking at hunting specifically, but one thing we learned was don't take safety precautions for granted. It's not a highly-regulated country with regulatory bodies that oversee fishing/hunting guides. They were in an overloaded boat without life jackets. The weather changed dramatically on the lake and the boat took on water and capsized. There were no flotation devices in the boat. My dad was a very detail-oriented and prepared person, but the people he was fishing with clearly weren't, and he (and another missionary) paid the price. But as far as the safety of the country and such, he always felt very safe and loved the people and culture there.

For sure. Also, this was 17 years ago... so things might have changed since then.

Spent the month of November last year in San Juan del Sur
Completely safe, never once had a "sketchy" feeling, day or night
Last day spent in Managua, toured museum and cathedral and walked the streets in the daytime, no problem. Was in by nightfall as I had a super early flight.

I went in May. Managua and Ometepe island.
Uneventful from a safety standpoint.
