Miles pulled Benton's scholarship offer according to Guilbeau:
quote:

Trades usually do not happen on national signing day, but LSU apparently completed on Wednesday what it hopes will be a blockbuster deal. The Tigers may also be due for a player to be named later from Auburn. After signing former Bastrop and academically troubled receiver DeAngelo Benton the last two years and hosting him on a visit last weekend, LSU coach Les Miles pulled a long standing scholarship offer to Benton on Tuesday night so as to grease the wheels for the arrival of the No. 1 receiver in the nation – Bastrop’s Rueben Randle.

quote:

Miles was asked at a press conference late Wednesday if Benton still had a scholarship offer by Wednesday morning before Benton signed with Auburn. Before Miles could answer, LSU athletic director Joe Alleva – located in the back of the room - frantically waved his arms to attempt to get Miles not to answer. But Miles answered, “No.”

Randle's father did not like the idea of Randle having to compete with Benton on the WR depth chart. In fact, he thought Benton was out of the picture until just recently when it became apparent that Benton was still in the mix and headed to LSU:
quote:

Randle’s father also was perturbed that he didn’t know LSU was quietly recruiting Benton, an academic casualty in 2007 and 2008 who had not been heard from in months until he said last week that he would be visiting LSU.

Bastrop coach Bradshaw is pissed:
quote:

“I think how it all went down was wrong,” an upset Bastrop High coach Brad Bradshaw said Wednesday night.

quote:

“All of the time I spent getting De-Lo eligible the last two years was so he could go back to LSU,” Bradshaw said Wednesday. “Now he’s not going to LSU. I’m sure he’s not very happy. The bottom line is D-Lo is going to Auburn.” Benton did visit Auburn two weeks ago, but Bradshaw said he had his heart set on going to LSU and was not serious about Auburn.

quote:

"I know what I say don't matter," Bradshaw said. "I'm nobody. But I don't like how this went down."

Benton had always planned on going to LSU:
quote:

“I'm signing with LSU,” Benton said Tuesday on his cellular phone. “I told coach Miles that when I was down there over the weekend (on Saturday). I'll be signing Wednesday at Bastrop." Benton did not return calls to his cellular phone on Wednesday

This is apparently what went down. Sorry if Germans, just thought I would try to recap the whole deal. If you would like to read the entire column by Guilbeau, the link is here:

I feel bad for Benton. Seemed like he was doing everything to qualify only to have Miles pull this last minute stunt because the Randle's had a hissy fit. Sad.

I don't feel bad for him what so ever..........if his passion was to wear purple and gold for 4 years, it was a slap in the face to our staff to visit Auburn 2 weeks ago........

No sympathy here, LSU gave this kid every opportunity to compete in the SEC at LSU, he didn't get his shite together in 2 years and then suddenly when he is about to qualify he was looking for visits........

Whatever D-Lo..........sorry buddy.

If it took Benton 2 years to get even with a high school grad, how the hell is he going to make grade at a college level. He was (is) going pro after just one year in college anyway. We didn't need the problem. Can you say R.P...?

Not similar circumstances........Benton made his own bed a long long time ago.

good lesson in life...people only you give you so many chances and twice blown has always spelled failure as far as im concerned. this kid better hope he sets the field on fire this year and able to go pro b/c I don't believe he will stay eligible. this kid has opportunity to become instant millionaire and he blows twice already...how many of you out there would not do everything humanly possible to succeed in situation like this?

He even got on campus, had an advisor, and a list of objectives to complete in order to get eligible.......People came bang on his door to wake him up to go to class........I mean come on.

Bradshaw then takes over and makes the kid study in his office and crap to get eligible. Again, poor decision to go visit Auburn after rumors are you are finally eligible to play ball.

I hope he has 15 tds and 1200 yards at Auburn next year. I also hope that he has 2 catches for 6 yards and a fumble when we play them.

Yes, Benton had his chances. But I still feel bad for the guy. Moreover, I actually admire him for not quitting and giving up on trying to qualify. Two years is a long time but he kept at it. Before anyone starts to dump on him, consider what he said just two days ago:
quote:

Benton said he has not talked with Randle about possibly being his teammate at LSU. "But I'd like to be teammates with him," Benton said. "It would be like old high school days. He probably would like it, too. He's a competitor."

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we got Randle. And if it came down to either Randle or Benton, I'll take Randle. I just don't understand why some people got it in their heads that these guys could not be on the same team.

No question about it we would, especially with that kind of talent. Part of me feels for Benton, but another part of me knows how Miles must feel with a guy who is seriously struggling getting qualified over and over, and putting your stock in him over a guy like Randall, especially like you said, when you consider the aspect of a guy with his academic struggles staying qualified. There's much to risk. And if you're trying to get qualified to attend LSU why do you visit Auburn? You can't be that much in love with LSU as his coach tries to paint it.

From what I've been able to gather from GG's article here, that's Randall's dad.

Yeah the real problem is if Bastrop is pissed for good. We need to keep after that place, not just get one player and be done with it.

We sure made a lot of concessions to get one player, didn't we?

I sincerely doubt Bradshaw will bust his arse again to try and get a player to LSU. Everyone needs to realize that Bradshaw was a big weapon for LSU and he really worked to get Benton there. There may be some fence-mending that needs to be done between Miles and Bradshaw. Because you know that Saban's arse is going to be lurking around now.

And all of you think that Kenny Bell is the one afraid of competition?

Pretty rotten and classless by Miles, if you ask me. Same response if you don't.

Which is worse not allowing a kid to be a part of your team or letting them qb you then going on ESPN and having a tirade about him not respecting your wishes.....

Thanks and have a nice day!

This is what bothers me the most. Let's hope he doesn't hold a grude. Let's face it. We can't lose Bastrop.

I really doubt that LSU devoting 2 years of patience on one of their players then having an interesting 2 weeks unfold when eligible is gonna affect his kids from going to LSU.

LSU is not responsible for this kid going to Auburn, D-Lo is.
