CAD's review of the "Big" Island & Hilo

Spent a week for work so had alot of time in the afternoon/evenings to wander. It started to feel like home after that many days.
We didn't make it to the south side/Kona since that was over 2 hours away and we didn't need a 5 hour round trip just to have a good cup of coffee.
The people were humble and friendly; all of them. A genuinely nice place; albeit somewhat poor.
We stayed in a VRBO off Sugar Mill road and even though we were surrounded by 5m houses, there were still salt-ravaged pickup trucks from the 90s with dudes running dogs pig hunting and knocking coconuts from the palms. Also found an abandoned spot right across the street with crazy-good grafitti.
The 3 main things we did was hit the volcano (and caught the pre-eruption lava flow!), a little German bakery and the HI botanical gardens..which if you've never been is 100% worth the visit. Its not like anywhere else on earth.
The flora in HI..my God. I restrained myself from uploading the 400 different photos of flowers I took
The scale of the trees on the big island are truly something to behold in person; pics don't do it justice.
Pathway across the street from our VRBO to the cliffs..
Graffiti on old sugar mill building the other direction
Love how they did the woman so you can see her through the doorway when you walk down
Volcano
Baumkuchen Bakery
Botanical gardens
Cannonball tree
those things were like kettlebells falling from 100ft up
Met this guy on the last day..i've never seen anyone so enthusiastic about his art.
He created that robot in his CAD program and 3D printed it, wrote a script for 6 episodes and now he's pitching it to netflix. Talked my ear off but i loved his attitude and everything about his project. I hope it succeeds, he's got a great hook for "Hilo 2100"

btw i should mention i found the toyota 4runners
ALL OF THEM
every 5th gen 4runner in existence in every color was on the island.
we walked out to a parking lot one day and there was..no joke..SEVEN white 4runners parked next to each other all in various stages of being tricked out.
the locals even have a name for it..they refer to them as 'lifted yotas' even if they're not lifted.
i didn't see a single tahoe, denali, suburban or nissan truck the whole week.
i dont recall seeing a rav4 or highlander either.
it makes me wonder if hawaii issues these to the residents
